the download of version 5 is this, just copy ftp link into browser window ftp2.avanquest.com/bluesquad/FR/FineReader/Abbyy%20Finereader5.exe (Avanquest is a third party software company.)

The details of the Service Pack 4 update http://www.abbyy.com/Default.aspx?DN=f17c3a3e-f71c-4568-a2a3-232a694a8ca3 , once you downloaded this FR5SP4.exe , you may get problem running this exe file as the program may prompt you for installation CD, instead use 7zip to open the exe file and extract the contents into a folder and then run the install.exe to upgrade to service pack 5. The build number is upgraded from 5.0.0.398 to 5.0.0.454
After signing up with your email you get the same free code FPE5-0167502-95883 , although you can install it on many computers but only one copy may be running at the same time on your IP address (seems to be some licensing control).

Was busy getting ready to post basically the same after removing my earlier post as it was just the service pack . You'll probably also need NTVDM and the corresponding dll file (click this for the 2 windows 8 32 bit files (they'll end up in system32) ) also don't forget to run sp4 pack as administrator.

Are you people serious?
This is for Windows 2000 / 95 / 98 / NT
so you'd better get your old machines out of the attic, haha

Oh and make sure you get all the dust and the bugs out beforehand,
because you'll be introducing some more if you install this on
todays computers.

Just tested it, works perfectly in Windows 8.1 and it also replaced my Windows XP ABBYY FineReader 4.0 that was bundled with a scanner bought eons ago. It is free so not as good in performance as version 7, 8, 9 or even 12. The vital fact is that after testing with photo images of letters, this version 5 still does a good job in OCR'ing the letter text (and this algorithms performance is not related to Windows versions contrary to those nut cases who are always on about different or better versions of iOS, Android and Windows since the key is the application version).

What does the program actually do?

To answer my own question, and to save anyone else from having to google:

ABBYY OCR software increases your productivity when working with documents and texts

ABBYY FineReader text recognition software helps you create easily editable, searchable files from paper documents, PDF files or digital photos. Save yourself the hassle of retyping documents - FineReader "reads" your files and converts them into text for you. Additionally, you won't lose valuable time with recreating the formatting of your document, such as structures, tables, columns, font styles and font sizes. It's simple - the software guides you step by step through the OCR process to give you optimal results.

Yes, I'm glad you love it and why do you exist posting ancient software of 2001 as the greatest discovery of 2015?
and with a misleading headline "Free ABBYY FineReader 5 Professional WORTH $169.99" ?

Yes , $169.99 ? For this version,? you must be joking.
maybe for version 12 , 14 years later.

Anyway- keep dreaming my friend ...Enjoy the New Year -are you aware it's actually 2015 ?

For all people in this community it would be better for you to find and post something useful rather than making pointless comments about what year it is and what kind of software is good for me and others, make something better in your life, i see that you only complain about issues u have. We do not need philosophers we need something other, so please be kind and make some posts and not retarded comments.
Just for you to know, if you need OCR, will you buy it or will you give it a shot from here?
Are all those people here that are grateful and nice, that are testing products and using them, are they mad? Or is it you?

No it is't just me. There have been other posts questioning your headline and the version of this software.
Also, you might set an example of what you think I should do regarding being kind.

You start off insulting me ,by calling me stupid and retarded- yes, great going and then tell me to be kind?
I haven't used those terms to you or anybody

All I did was state the facts as they exist.

BTW, yours isn't the only post on the internet regarding this version 5 and if you were at all informed,
you would also know that a lot of people have trouble with this old version, regardless of the fact
that some users on this site seem to have been able to install and use it for what it can accomplish
albeit limited compared to newer versions.

Look. I've been testing software for the last 25 years and have tested thousands of software titles
during that time and am always up for a challenge, but to mislead people
with untrue headlines is not my style,

I have hundreds of older programs . Some work on newer versions of Windows, some not and introduce
endless compatiblilty problems.
My personal other software archive contains well over 5000 titles and each one wil exhibit
compatbillity issues depending on which version of Windows I use them on or on which computer.

I'm afraid you can't take criticism and/or accept facts.. But don't blame me for that.
Enjoy your ego trip.

But remember , if you want to set an example, don't start by insulting people.
What I did was state some facts- .....................

This version is too old.
Too old for what?
I need OCR and using Win 7 this works perfect.
I do not need newest version...

This version is usable, I do very little OCR as I do 99.9% scan or photo nowadays since storage disk is very cheap. For my tiniest amount of OCR that I do I am still using ABBYY FineReader 4.0 from pre year 2000. That did the job OK even now for printed letters and printed text. So I am quite happy with this free ABBYY FineReader 5.0 which I just installed on my legacy Windows XP system as well as my latest Windows 8.1 with latest updates. For higher OCR accuracy there was also ABBYY Screen Shot that was available free a few months' ago which I also have.

No wonder this program is free, it's obsolete. No updates No support you have to be desperate to download it.
