Free Access to BT OpenZone WiFi hotspots for all BT Broadband users

dufus124dufus124

I've just been checking out the latest terms and conditions for the BT FON service... https://www.bt.com/wifi/secure/index.do

This is a joint initiative through BT and FON to turn all the BT Home Hubs into WiFi Hotspots. HOWEVER... if you read the small print, you are allowed to sign up to be a hotspot 'provider' even if you don't have a compatible router (so any one with BT broadband can sign up for free), and you will get your FREE inclusive minutes that can be used on any FON access point, OR BT OpenZone public wifi!

From T&C's...
"Once opted-in you will also get access to the Internet when you are in a BT Openzone or in range of a FON access point outside of the UK. "

Important bit...!
"Even if you dont have a hub you will still get the minutes of access when you opt-in. If you get a hub in the future and remain opted in it will automatically be configured to allow other BT FON Wi-Fi community members to log in"

The Free minutes you will get depend on your Broadband Option...
"Option 1 customers* get 250 minutes,
Option 2 customers get 350 minutes
Option 3 customers get unlimited** minutes of access per month."

So, if you are using a BT broadband connection you can now opt in for this regardless of whether you have the ability to share your connection or not and still benefit from the free minutes to connect yourself to hotspots!

Enjoy!

P.s. I know this has been posted before (over 2 years ago), but then you were required to be able to share your connection to take part, now 'sharing' is optional, so no 'FON' router required etc!

P.p.s many people don't know that your BT username and password are also used for Flickr where you have the full unlimited package with unlimited uploads and data storage!

If your on BT broadband option 3 you get 500 free openzone per month
Unlimited fon use per month, you only get this if you sign up to allow your router on the fon network so other bt members can use it

I thought so originally, I don't use BTs Home Hub I use a Netgear router I thought I might have to use the HomeHub in order to get the benefit of the fon network but don't thank goodness

Interesting scheme however I do have a question now

Under the digital britain bill it has been reported that there will be an onus is on the owner of the modem to ensure that he/she make its secure and it is not used for illegal means

Ah but you have to log in with your BT username and password which I dare say is linked to your account details so this will have I presume some form of trackability by the ISP.

If you read how the FON thing works, it will appear as a separate SSID and any traffic taken over this connection is kept separate from your personal data. This means that it doesn't eat into your Data allowance and if anyone does anything 'illegal' or the like on the connection, they know it isn't you (as they will know the login of the user on the FON AP).

Also, interestingly, if you were on one of the 'capped' BT Broadband services, and then took part in the FON scheme. FON usage is done on a per minute basis, so, you could log yourself into your own FON AP whenever you want to do some heavy downloading (movie or something) and then it wouldn't take up your data allowance, and then switch back to your normal wifi connection for general browsing ;-)

    Always gotta play the system!!

It won't eat into your data allowance, but it will eat into your bandwidth. My connection is so slow (thanks BT) that I wont share it with anyone.

Good info. Rep added. However, I cannot get the Flickr access to work, are you using this?

    Thanks
