I'm hoping this may be of interest to HUKD members who have been researching their family history. Access to the 1991 Census is usually by payment-only, but for 90 minutes tomorrow (Friday) you can have access free of charge. You do need to register by midnight tonight though. However, I think they plan to repeat this free access on each day that England play a World Cup match.

I didn't put this under Freebies because you need to register your details to take up the offer - ops will move it if its in the wrong place. Direct link to further details:

http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/

With the next England match just around the corner, were warming up to provide further entertainment for any non-football fans in the form of our second World Cup widows offer:

90 minutes free access to findmypast.co.uk at a time of your choice on the day that England play when England play, you still dont pay!*

How to get free access

Make sure you are registered on the website before midnight (UK time) on the day before the match. If you have already registered, you do not need to do this again.
Return to findmypast.co.uk at a time of your choosing between 9am (UK time) on the day of the match and 9am (UK time) the day afterwards.
Once you have signed in, you will have 90 minutes to search and view the records for free.

The free 90 minutes are available as a continuous period and will begin the moment you sign into findmypast.co.uk between the times stated above. If youre not in the UK, you can convert the UK times above into local time here. A listing of the scheduled England matches is available here.

Our World Cup Widows offer for the second England match is now much more flexible, particularly for those of you based outside of the UK. You are now able to use the records at findmypast.co.uk at a time that suits you. Weve been working hard to improve the speed of the site after the overwhelming popularity of our first offer so that even more customers will be able to benefit from it.

Visit our World Cup page for more information. If you need a helping hand with your research, take a look at our video tutorials or our Getting Started page which provide advice and tips about using our records.

Wed love to hear about any discoveries you make while our records are free to view - post anything youd like to share with us and our readers on our Facebook page.

*All records available using our Full subscription (including the 1911 Census) will be free: Living Relatives searches and Memorial scrolls are not included.

Find My Past is primarily England and Wales records. If you are researching ancestors in Scotland or abroad, then ancestry.co.uk is probably better. They don't have the 1911 Census yet though. You can get a 14-day trial:

Also for anyone interested the 1901 and 1911 Census records for Ireland (Eire) are available free - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

For information the 1911 Census records for Scotland won't be available until March 2011 (due to the 100 year rule - freedom of information).

Used this on the 1st free access day, found sooooo much info though it is very slow due to the extra traffic. Managed to get back to my great, great, great, great grandparents on my mums side, can't wait till tomorrow now to do more!

Also try using http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl for free searches, you can't view transcripts but I found this amazingly helpful to get marriage records, which then gave me maiden names for the women. Eg: You have a relative called Albert Dobbs, wife called Ada, search for the mans name with wifes first name only, over even a 20 year period.

I was lucky and have managed to get back as far as 1823 upto now, and now I have maiden names I can go back further with the census results! It's very exciting!

Hopefully will be better this time as they are allowing free access for any 90 mins of the day. Last Saturday is was only during the match itself. Nice to see they have learnt from their mistakes. I'm pretty sure you can have another free 90 mins tomorrow even though you already used it last time.

And thanks to everyone who has added additional useful advice and links to my posting.

am i missing something? Is it not better to sign up to their trial which gives you 14 days of free access not 90 minutes?

Even better if you go through quidco you get £1.85 for the free trial.

or even better, if you live in or around London you can pop into Guildhall Library in the City and access the site free every day for the whole day (maybe I should start a new thread...)

The free trial does not give you access to the 1911 census images

Please UNEXPIRE this thread.

I used this on the 18th June and found 5 generations of my family, and it will be available for free again on the 23rd when England play next.

You must register by midnight the night before.
Then when you log in on the day, the moment you log in you get 90 for free.
I went through the 1911 and 1901 for free, and knew my time had run out when it was asking me to buy credits!!

If you need the 1881 census - it's free all the time!!!
