Not really free access, shows that it's found results but to preview have to sign up to a 'free trial' that needs you to choose a term and cost and provide card details.

In fact, just noticed that the records that match my searches are all 'preview' and require the signup to view, where the 'similar records' (i.e. the ones that you don't want because they're not a match) are all 'free access'. :| that's poor. :|

Also if you are interested in dipping your toes in the water a little further they do offer a 14 day free trial which should be enough to see what you think and get you started. There are loads of records on there, my family tree is a little complicated and I never thought I would be able to trace back anyone on my fathers side but u have been overwhelmed by the amount of information I have managed to find, it has enabled me to answer questions that our not even my own Dad knew or even his Dad! There are other sites and resources but when any are free grab them with both hands!!! :)

Thanks for that but I found another public family tree that looks like it ties into mine but when I want to view it I have to pay. Free should be free not free until you find something useful.

It's UK records are free as long as you have an account (if you have to give card details then make sure you uncheck subscription renewal)

I previously had my account running on a discounted cost but couldn't afford the renewal fees for the last 3+ months but since I found the free 48hr pass I've been hitting Ancestry hard with updates to my tree.

Again it is free for UK Records (from UK Census to BMD's to Church records to UK Electoral Registers

Parrsh records are free also on familysearch.org and Births, Death, Marriages are free on freebmd.org.uk although parish records are not complete and freebmd only goes upto a certain date

The benefit to ancestry.co.uk is it's all in one place but the cost of proper subscription (especially if you find relatives overseas) is too expensive IMHO

Agreed - I noticed that issue but for some reason if it's a "private tree" you can still message the user to request access whereas the "open trees" you are not allowed to view

If anyone needs further assistance/advice/help with their family tree pm me - I've got over +10yrs experience/knowledge and will help where I can

But the most single piece of advice I would give is forget siblings of marriages in your tree - stick to direct ancestors otherwise a 300 plus family members descendant tree can turn into 30,000+ family members tree - I was addicted

No, on free access weekends etc you shouldn't have to pay, at other times you would, I think a couple of other posters said that they would have to pay to view trees not sure about that - I have the annual subscription so I can view everything, I do think that this is a great resource you have posted though and anyone that has even the slightest interest in their Ancestry should definitely take advantage of the free weekend offer or even the 14 day trial it gives you a feel for what it's about before you have to put your hand in your pocket.

Again thanks for posting I am sure there are a lot of people who would not have known this was available this weekend and will grateful that you have posted it :)

Got to the bottom of it (I think) when you first register and enter your details and perform searches you're taking to the hints screen, with the leaf indicating hints over a vertical family tree. On this, very few are viewable - most are 'preview' and simply take you to a sign up page asking for the card details etc.

when you leave this completely and go into the full tree, or perform a separate search then these items are available to view.

Glad you sorted it out - good luck with the searches - it can be a bit addictive - I often dip in and out of mine although some of mine is quite complicated. The trees can be a great resource, however if you use any information from them be careful as sometimes people do get their wires a little crossed and it's very easy to end up with the wrong people in a tree, just cross reference dates, places etc before popping some on yours and you should be ok. Have fun :)

thanks fairyfeet - I've already found that it's easy to add the wrong birth record etc - they just seem to add themselves :-)
