  Use avast free anti-virus, found it much more secure and easier to use compared to Sophos: http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button. Not happy about Facebook linking either.

  Tried to get Norton, hit the download but nothing happened :(

  this plainly shouldn't be allowed here IMO, installing antivirus from facebook is just asking for trouble
  
  can more or less guarantee it'll install some sort of malware or adware

  Thanks everyone for the advice. After the growing consensus about concerns with Facebook,I think I was lucky that nothing downloaded and thus given up on it.
  
  My fault for not giving my motive for wanting Norton, I wanted it for a Macbook so I think Avast would not work here.

  There is an Avast version for Mac's. It is a slimmed down version as Apple have far stricter controls on what can be done with their operating system, but it does offer web protection, mail scanning and file scanning....

  There is also Sophos, which is free. Reviews are generally good, unless you are running OSX Lion. If you are, scanning is slow:
