Antivirus and anti-spyware engine Improved

Innovative scanning engine protects against viruses, spyware, and other malicious agents.
Real-time anti-rootkit protection

Prevents stealth malware (‘rootkits’) that, when loaded by the computer’s OS, are invisible to ordinary scanners.

avast! WebRep New

Provides website reliability and reputation ratings according to community-provided feedback.
avast! CommunityIQ

Our technology uses a global network of sensors to provide us with data taken (anonymously) from the actual web-browsing experiences of an opt-in group of avast! users. This info is then used to protect all avast! users with the most up-to-date information on viruses and infected websites.
Because of avast! CommunityIQ, avast! has discovered 74,895 infected websites and protected 122,464,309 people from visiting them in the last 30 days.

Boot-time scanner Improved

Scans your computer for infections before the OS can start to activate any viruses beneath it (now applies to Windows 7 and Windows Vista).

AutoSandbox New
Prompts users to run suspicious applications in the virtual Sandbox environment.

Intelligent Scanner

Reduces the number of required file scans up to 80% through a white list of safe applications. Files identified as safe are not rescanned unless they change.
Silent/Gaming Mode

Automatically detects full-screen applications and disables pop-ups and other notifications without compromising security.
Green computing

Leaves a minimal “footprint” due to its efficient and effective technology.

P2P Shield/IM Shield

Checks files downloaded via P2P programs and while using IM or “chat” programs.
Network Shield

Protects against network-based viruses with two main components: a URL blocker for malicious URLs, and a lightweight intrusion-detection system.
Script Shield Improved

Detects malicious scripts hidden in web pages and prevents them from hijacking and potentially damaging your computer.
Behavior Shield Improved

Stops ‘zero-day’ threats and unknown malware before virus definitions have been obtained.

I've been meaning to drop AVG, it keeps minimising my games when in full screen. Maybe this is will make a good substitute.

Kapersky is free so why use inferior anti-virus sware - strange???
#13

Never had a problem with Avast.

LOL. Gotta love glib comments like this (neither helpful, accurate or constructive) Like most things personal preference should be influenced/determined by reasoned assesment of the relevent criteria pertaining to the intended purpose/scenario. Not much to choose between the two really FWIW both offer reasonable levels of performance protection & reliability. "Suck 'em and see" is the best advice I'd give (not that my opinion should outweigh anyone elses)

I would rather go without protection than use this, the amount of laptops and pcs i have had to sort out with this on is stupid, AVG everyday of the week.
#18

lol, if Kaspersky is free then please provide a link.

Avast is not inferior either, if you care to keep up to date with security software then you would see that Avast is up there at the top consistently in (unsponsored) tests.

There is also a 55% discount on Avast products if you visit here http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=285920

I was going to start a seperate thread but deemed it pointless really as i think we know what the majority of post would have been about why buy when free.
If i can afford it at the time then i will buy it to support the company as if no one buys eventually the free versions will disappear

Here's a useful document for anyone without the resource to test all the available AV products/options -->AV Comparative report
AV-Comparatives is an Austrian Non-Profit-Organization, which is providing independent Anti-Virus software tests free to the public.

Thats like saying youd rather not use protection with a female than use a brand of condom you dont like. VERY SILLY ACTIONS. Alot of people out there who dont know much about antivirus will probably read your comment there, think antivirus isnt that important then decide not to install any! BAD TIMES!
#27
doesn't the version 5 just update itself in the updates to version 6 anyway ??

Lol AVG fanboy :)

Seriously though for anyone who may not know, dont run two Antivirus products in real time at the same time.

I have used Avast for a long time, brilliant program, no complaints whatsoever. http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af309/trent-bishop/Gifs/thumbsup-5.jpg

Yes it should do.

Mine didn't update on it's own as it said to remove the old version first , when I did this I couldn't get to install the new one for some reason . So I am trying Kapersky as of yesterday it's free with Barclays bank online customers.

AVG is a hog, provides worse protection and frankly have dumped on every PC that comes through my doors. I have have recently had to clear a number using AVG that caught spoof AV progs from Adobe/Java flaws that a decent AV should have caught.

Version 6 is also much lighter on ram than v5 (25% on my machine) and it feels more responsive as a result.
Kaspersky is free to Barclays users but I would rate this as my #1 free AV over MSE, Avira or AVG

daft questions for some but not for me, i have mcafee running suplied by bt internet (bt net plus), and also superantispyware. the questions are, are these the same type of products, are they any good, do they run together, should i boycot one or both? the reason i ask is that my system is unbelivably slowwww. my computer runs with windows vista.

one of your problems is vista. if you have mcafee running, i don't think there is a need for superantispyware.
