FREE bikes are being wheeled out in most areas of Liverpool in a bid to get people active and cut down on car use.

The TravelWise project is being piloted in Liverpool until April, using European Union cash, and will attempt to gauge the demand for cycles.

More than 3,500 postcodes in Liverpool are eligible for a free bike, including residents in Wavertree, Old Swan, Anfield, Everton and Dingle.

#11
damn, extend it to birmingham i need a new bike and im not a *****!
#12
I work in Liverpool but live on the Wirral (other side of the river). I drive because bikes don't run on water too well. I have to laugh when I see cycle lanes terminate when things get a bit tricky at roundabouts etc. - you're on your own mate! Schemes like this aren't really serious because the people who run them wouldn't be seen dead outside of their cars (and there's a fair chance of that happening on a bike).
Still, it's a good deal if you're in the right area so no need to vote cold.
#13
Good find. I too think it is a daft scheme, but since I am a rate payer here in Liverpool I might as well see if I can get one :)
#14
mmm ood offer why just there also if they brake or something goes wrong with them do u get them fixed for free as well ;) its a shame its not all over th uk.
anyway we are not paying for this as th money is comeing from the European Union cash

Haha that title made me laugh.

A few posts have been removed today containing uncalled for remarks about Liverpool. Hopefully those posted here will be also.
Please comment on the bike not the people of Liverpool:)

Not really sure of the logic of this scheme.
Cycle2work is an excellent scheme for buying a bike with a large contribution to the purchase of the bike and you choose which bike you want to buy.
When I lived in Cambridge they introduced free painted bikes to the street, they didn't last long! Cambridge lies in the bike theft triangle of Cambridge - Oxford - London. Steal in one city, transport to the other city and sell there. I had two bikes stolen in one week and the second was a replacement for the first.
Please also note that this ill considered policy is the product of TravelWise with the European Union, not Westminster.

Well, the bike scheme is a government plan, so to be honest I think that is ok, because you cannot separate the scheme from the schemers :):-D
It isn't nice to stereotype people regardless if is done in jest or not.

Sounds like an EU plan so to be honest surely any slight on the high regard with which the Labour government are held should be treat with the same contempt as the comments about the apparently crime free Utopia of Liverpool?

where do you think the EU get the money from,
the tax payers of this country and all the other member states so in the long run we do pay for it.

Sounds like a good swap :-D

Yes, but you could also say it's the waste of French tax payers' money, so who cares?

Think of it like this: The tax payers of Liverpool are going to get a bike-shaped rebate.
#26
I agree it's a waste of money... or maybe I'm just bitter I live in a part of Liverpool that for some reason doesn't fall under the terms of this bike giveaway! :x
#27
It's One bike per household :)

and it is still a waste of money when they could be keeping pensioners house's warm so they are not freezing to death.
#29
I am actually starting to really enjoy being a full-time student and have a part time job. Enough money to earn...tax free. Want to stay tax free for ever! :x

Better make the most of it

I don't understand, you think a transport initiative should be keeping pensioners' houses warm? Oh I see, you don't think cleaner forms of transport should be promoted so that pollution from unnecessary car travel can speed up global warming which would keep pensioners good and toasty. Gotcha. ;-)

to state its a waste of french taxpayers money, not ours is very naive. We pay the highest contribution, along with the germans (net contribution of £1200 for every person in the UK! :w00t:).

Its a complete waste of OUR money and do you really think the bikes will be used by the people receiving them? :whistling:

what i think is that instead of wasting money on pushbikes they could use the money help keep the pensioners warm that are dying from the cold especially at this time of year,
if you have been brainwashed into believing all the global warming gumf and cant see that it is just another excuse to tax people more then that is up to you.

#35
