This Sunday, August 31st, 2008 marks the 13th anniversary of the storied Command & Conquer franchise, which has sold over 25 million copies* to date. And to celebrate Sundays milestone and this Octobers highly anticipated return to the world of Red Alert with Red Alert 3, EA Los Angeles is giving away one of the original games that started it all, Command & Conquer Red Alert, for FREE.

Starting at 12:00 AM Pacific time on August 31st, C&C fanatics can flock to www.RedAlert3.com to download the original Red Alert free of charge. And because EA is also offering Red Alert 2 for free for those who pre-order Red Alert 3 before October 27th, C&C fans can walk away with Red Alert, Red Alert 2 and Red Alert 3 all for the price of Red Alert 3 ($49.99 standard edition, $64.99 Premier Edition).

A free classic game, well worth a download! I already have it about three times on discs, so it's useless to me but anybody who doesn't have it anymore should download straight away!
#2
Downloading now.... thanks!

I love Red Alert - its the only game I have ever really been addicted too!

Has this been on before? I downloaded a C&C for my cousin - not much into PC games myself as I'm rubbish at them - so if anyone knows if it's the same or a different one I'd be gratefull to hear so I don't rag my bandwidth for nothing!

Regardless of that though a FREE game can never be cold... Unless it's Worms as it cost me a mouse in frustration last time I tried it after the pub!
#7
Nice one I've still got the original, but it wouldn't install last time I tried as the installer was expecting Win95, good speed aswell atm

Superb, thanks.

this was the first game I played online (directly on the internet) when I was a teenager. I remember the laddering system they did, at my peak I was 500th in the world!

Was a great game, mainly because they took C&C, didn't change it too much (winning formula) and went hi res.

Definitely worth a download.

The first one came out was the original C&C, not this one. This is the red alert one :)

cheers. just started downloading both disks. 20 mins to go :)

Excellent, nothing like a bit of nostalgia gaming! The europe servers are getting pretty hammered so it looks like it'll take a few hours for it to download.

Ta Mith... I'll get it on the go right now!

Great offer, shame free download isn't compatible with Vista
#15
Yes it does, its just not that easy.
First of all you have to run everything in compatbility mde for Win95, including the installer. Do not install DirectX when installing the game.
Then locate the patch folder and copy the patch to the installation directory. Run that, and then the game should run.

Scary how old it look now, compared to C&C3!

Great game especially when multi-playing online with customise maps. Still one of best classic games I would recommend for those who are not too concern about the latest games with power-hungry CPU/GPU. Those were the early days. Still think other game software production houses should occasionally release old games for free publicity. :p

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone knew if this version has been optimised in any way? I have the version that came with 'The First Decade' pack but you have to jump through hoops to install it correctly, and it runs extremely poorly (everything moves lightning fast on my computer, and screen shifts very fast). If anyone can left me know it would be very much appreciated.
#26
Well I downloaded it and can't get it to work even with the supplied XP patch.

Shame, this was a great game on my old 95 machine.:-(
#27
BTW did anyone see Gemma Atkinson (of Hollyoaks fame) in the new game?
#28
how do you get the game to work?
#29
I've just some home to download this, whooping fast speeds!

When i opened the contents of the disc on winzip, it was a load of pictures and some install files. The word document said I should put in a disc. Do i have to burn all the files to a blank CD, that's not too bad or is there an easier way. Thanks for your help!
#34
I'm going to use daemon tools to create a virtual drive to play it.
#35
Brilliant, Red Alert 2 must have been my favourite PC game, never played the first one though and well looking forward to the third one.
#36
I Ordered Red alert 3 then I got Red Alert 2 for free.
After that I Downloaded Red Alert 1.

Whoo hoo!
I got Red Alert 1, 2 and 3 very easily and for the price of 1.

Thank you!

Lets you "mount" ISO images (so your PC thinks you've put the CD in)
#38
Err just use Daemon Tools.
#39
Daemon tools and several other apps mentioned earlier that could help you run this game without burning it onto a disc.
