Thanks AM999. This looks useful

Or try VoIP Stunt for unlimited free UK calls. The catch: you need to deposit a tenner + foreign VAT (11.60 altogether) to your account
#3
I am think of using Skype
But does the cost have to be connected to your actual phone bill or can it be used like Pay As You Go.

You can't make calls via Skype without having your PC running. They are using proprietary protocol and don't disclose it to ATA manufacturers. So this is major drawback for me.

What Kommunist doesnt know about VOIP just isnt worth knowing!!

I wish... :) No, seriously, Skype is a good company and they have a lot of satisfied customers. I just don't see the point of going with Skype when you can have SIP-based solutions with easy (sort of) to use devices. But that's my personal view and I am sure many people would disagree with.
As to VoIP knowledge I only started to learn about it a month or two ago and I don't know much. I just don't have enough time for it :(

Please vote even if you don't like it, it was nearly not allowed, I won't say any more.

p.s. pref vote hot.

I would rather vote "warm" but if I'd do that, the overall temperature will fall, so I prefer not to.
And what do you mean by "nearly not allowed"? Do you have insider's information about Betamax?
#11
I don't understand. Will somebody explain in simple English how this VOIP thingy works please.
#12
You can make calls via Internet. Easiest way to do it is to download software to your computer and use microphone and speakers. Then you sign up for VoIP companies and make calls with their software. You can make calls to other people's computers and real phones. And this is much cheaper than using BT or NTL. Sometimes even free.

Was my English plain enough? ;)

VoipCheap, VoipStunt, FreeCalls, VoipDiscount ....... ALL are the SAME :-D

Here is the info I collected about these sites:

VoipCheap is a service from
Betamax GmbH & Co KG
Im Mediapark 8
50670 Köln

VoipStunt is a service from

FreeCall.com is relatively a new site and they are offering 5 hour Free calls instead of the standard 1 min trials.

Thanks Kommunist. Yes just how I like it, plain and simple but.....
Why join Skype or whoever when you can 'talk' on MSN? My Daughter has been 'chatting' to friends for ages on it.
Looking at the prices above it looks pretty expensive to call a UK Landline or Mobile.
#15
MSN can't dial out to someone's landline phone, if I understand correctly. With VOIP this is one of the benefits - landline calls at a fraction of the cost your provider charges you.

I'm not completely proficient in these things, but I think that's right.

Because some people:
a) don't have PC;
b) don't want their PC to be working 24x7;
c) don't want/know how to operate PC
d) like convenience of using proper phone without paying too much for service.

I personally belong to group but my callees are in all four groups.

Want to uncover another "secret"?
Do you know that almost all those cheap call (I am not talking about VoIP now) companies like 1899, 18185, 1866, etc are owned by company called Finarea SA?
And if you are really serious about secrets and conspiracies then you'll find that Betamax and Finarea got very close ties. So effectively most (can't say "all" as I never bothered to verify that) cheap dial-through call companies and some VoIP companies owned by the same people :)
#17
Thanks Emma and Kommunist.
I'm going to look into this further. I only use my Landline for 0845,0870 etc that aren't covered by my mobiles 'free' calls.
#18
Hey dino - off topic but you're the first non-mod to get a bright green light in your reputation. Well done!

Make the most of this offer as it will end on 19 September 2006 when freecall will become vonage - which I think means you will need a 12 month contract or have to pay £23.99 (or more) disconnection fee

Premier:- The 5h Free Calls offer is from FreeCalls & not Freetalk :)

Whoops, my bad

It was nothing insider, just banter, enjoy.

Yes they did, thanks.
I've now got Skype but I will only use it for 0845 and 0870 numbers and I'm hoping to get rid of the Landline soon.
If Skype can be used without the computer being on later in the year that will be great.
We have nearly 3,000 minutes P/M 'free' calls via 'free' mobile contracts in our house. Everybody having their own 'free' contract.

Philips already have the skype phone out! They have for a long while...

Good tip...but, what when you are on the road and need to make a call abroad from your mobile?

Calling abroad from your mobile normally costs a fortune.

Yet, you can easily override your mobile operator’s network by pre-dialling certain access numbers provided by www.pennyphone.co.uk – a low-cost phone service provider in the UK- before you international call.

You can use it from your mobile right away without setting up an account.

Depending on your calling plan and network, there is a suitable access number for you:

Most O2 users with inclusive cross network minutes can use them to call abroad for free via 0844 452 1 452

T-Mobile or Three contract users can enjoy a wider range of destinations for only 10p per minute via 0871 280 5 280

Other mobile network users including PAYG can still make substantial savings via 0870 963 0 963

Making cheap or even free international calls from your UK mobile is so easy:

Step 1. Dial the access number that better suits your mobile network
Step 2. Now, dial the number you wish to call to get connected – that’s all!

Enjoy the freebie!
#31
So on T-Mobile one would pay 10p for dialing to 0871 number + international rate from pennyphone?

There are better deals out there, IMHO.

No! the beauty of this service is that the 10p/min rate includes all, you do not pay any extra for your international call... ;)

Enjoy it while it last!

Thanks for clarification, I wasn't quite sure whether they charge 10p in addition to T-Mobile tariffs or not.

I've just joined up with FreeCall which seemed almost to good to be true (Free calls and no credit). I was even more elated to find that you can phone 0845 and 0870 numbers for free also. :-D No more money to BT!!

It says at the bottom of the page that 300 minutes are reset every week anyway!!

Is there anything to stop you making lots of trial calls?? You can do that for free on this page from your home phone, though not tried it yet
