Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores.

You need to check with your local shop for their participation but in a nutshell, if they are a comic book retailer they usually participate. You can pretty much walk in and grab as many free comics as you want. Titles that are available are in the deal link, but a flavour of what you can get:- Spider-Man, Green Lantern, Sonic the Hedgehog, Batman, Avatar, 2000AD, The Tick, Mickey Mouse, Simpsons, various Manga, Captain America, Thor and loads more.

Hope it better than last year. As the shop nnear us had aselection of the" Free comic book day" comics. My son hadn't heard of any of them. He thought the same as me. You could wander in the shop and take a regular comic off the shelf.

@potty_paula you're complaining because the store near you wouldn't let you walk away with items that you had picked up off of the shelf? What shops do you know that let you walk away with any merchandise you feel without paying, the publishers create a range of free comics and goodies as samples for you to take home, but they're not just going to set a day where you get a pass for shoplifting their products wholesale.

Please do tell what goodies they were giving away so I can try other shops. We thought it was going to be like World Book Day a chance to promote reading. Not all kids enjoy reading books so this would have been an ideal time to get them to try a different way. In case you dont know what World Book Day is, it's when children are given a token from school and can go into a participating retailer take a book from the World Book Day selection and take it home for free. Books might I add that children have heard of.

Many thanks for that Andy, and also thanks Robin for the link.
The brother and I might benefit from this as we love reading the Simpsons comics.
We'll make sure we're up early next Saturday :)

So you think World Book Day is great, where you need a voucher and get to choose one book. But, Free Comic Day, where you don`t need a voucher and you can take several comics, is rubbish.

That is some barmy logic right there.

And, as Andy posted in his OP, the titles include Green Lantern, Spiderman, Simpsons Mickey Mouse etc. So, implying that it`s only little known comics which are included in the offer is just wrong.

In the past they`ve given away Disney comics, Transformers, Batman etc. All good stuff for free.

Perhaps it's just the shops I have gone to. As for the last three comic book days there hasn't been any Disney Transformers Batman etc. I do think 1 book my children would read compared to several comics they have never heard of and wouldn't read is great. Not quite sure how that is barmy logic. Or perhaps I should pick up several free comics and hand them to my boys and watch the confusion on their face. And then fill my recycle bin when they say they dont want them. For the last 3 years they advertised the shop in my town. When I went in to ask for the comics they had no idea what I was talking about. Said it's on the free comic book day web page. So I will make a note of these comics and compare what they have in the shops I visit. And if the dont have them I can ask why. Not forgetting the goodies mentioned earlier.

What an awesome sense of entitlement you have.

Anyway, the whole deal with Free Comic Book Day is to get you reading stuff maybe you haven't heard of, perhaps a little outside your comfort zone. I would have loved something like this when I was a kid.

No Toy Story and Shrek in the shops I went in. Did say" Perhaps it's just the shops I have gone to". Hence I also said "I will make a note of what's on offer and ask if they haven't got them. Maybe you missed that bit?
