> Free of charge forever!
For a domain from smartdots no costs arise for you. This service is absolutely free and will always remain free, be it for commercial or private use.

> No banners/no compulsory advertising!
When accessing your personal domain no compulsory advertising in form of pop-up windows, delay pages or frames will be shown! However, you do have the choice of displaying a popup or integrating a small link or button which points to this service. Sure, without being obliged to do this.

> Forwarding is possible to any URL, no matter which provider!
You can forward your personal domain from smartdots to any chosen URL. Forget long internet addresses such as:
http://user.providername.com/users/category/your-name/index.html.
The success of a site on the internet is often due to a nice, short address wich can be easily be remembered.

Good for anybody who wants to have a play with webhosting and not pay out any cash. Download Apache Server, point the domain to your own IP, job done ;-)

It's the third-level domains or sub-domains that are free. Not very professional looking if you do run a site.

You can get a .com or a .org for less than a fiver these days.

http://www.domparison.com (some info might be out of date, but I just used this to renew my domain name for about £4.30 /yr)

not so reassuring when smartdots own website doesn’t work!

Yeah - pretty much. So long as you own the real domain (e.g. http://net.tc). Reminds me of the old cjb.net redirect I had long ago. (just tested and it still works! pretty solid for being around for so long)

When I first read the post, I thought this was a top level domain, like yourname.tc, but it's actually yourname.net.tc etc.

I remember something else from a few years ago - it still seems to be around.

You can get a free TLD at http://www.dot.tk

So you get http://yourname.tk if available. I just tried it and it still works. I didn't see any ads or popups - see http://shell-shocked.tk/ for example. That's a redirect to an existing site.

The country of Tokelau provides this service. They have pay-for services, but I think they initially did it to raise the profile of the country.

Update: I looked in the T&C and it says "This list gives an overview of all your registered Dot TK domain names. Note that FREE domains expire after 90 days when less than twenty-five (25) users have been to your website." So it has to be something you will use (e.g in an email sig, or a blog post. I imagine it's easy to set up something like a watchthatpage email alert to automatically check the domain every day to ensure it stays alive.) This might be a show stopper for some though.

Some really good advices guys! However I would prefer something well-known as .com .net for a good price...
#17
useless for me as it's .tc domain, .info domains were free too few years ago so you could make money from them registering hundreds of them and selling them later when they become paid.Don't know if you can make any money from .tc as it don't seem like to be a popular domain.May be good for forum script or blogs, directories etc... anyway voted hot

www.freedomain.co.nr is probably better.

ive just made a website and got the sub domain put there, works well (ad-free)

Its free so whats the problem?

Just be careful what info you give to smartdots

Did a background check on the company behind this--Interdots Int'l--and it might be involved in fraud

:pirate: I give it an Arrr! rating
