What is this for?

For getting the Sega Dreamcast online i presume.

It's a replacement for dreamarena, which was Segas ISP, allowing you to play online games etc (a forerunner of Xbox live). Since the dreamcast ceased production sega released dreamkey, which let you use your own ISP (demon, plus, freeserve etc) to play these games over (and let them shutdown dreamarena.

Useful for those who've still got a dreamcast and enjoy a bit of phantasy star online (I think that's the only game you can play online!) so a bit limited, but good info anyway.

Is it 1999 again lol
#5
sweeet online in no time if i can get it :D:D
#6
I thought PSU wasnt online anymore on DC lol. So what game is there possibly to play?
#7
If you dont have a DC broadband modem then it is pretty pointless to take the DC online nowadays. It costs too much to pay dial-up costs.

I ordered my Dreamkey 3 online from the Dreamcast back in 2001!
#8
yep as you all guessed it is just a way of getting the dreamcast online. I've been told there are still several servers that are owned by gamers just like ourselves. Might be worth a go, nothing to lose as it's a freebie..
banned#9
People still play the dreamcast and it has a fan base who would play until the day that die!
#10
You can use any ISP you like - it doesn't have to be dial up.

That is the point of this disk, after all.
#11
i loved my dreamcast to bits literally! Then Sega stabbed us in the back! ;)
#12
Thanks, still my favourite console :).

F355 Challenge has online play and is still done now and then, I don't know what other games are still online without servers..

from the faq

Q. What games can I play online?
A. Dreamkey 3.0 / 3.1 supports the online play of Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Online Version 2 only

Unless you have the broadband adapter for the Dreamcast (£50 - £100, it varies), then yes, it does have to be dial-up as the modem is a dial-up one!

Ah, these were the days.

I remember sending off for m FREE Chu Chu Rocket from Sega - which promptly arrived....and it was GREAT.

But yeah, the Modem is atually slower than dial up - for Europe anyway. So all in all, it's pretty poor.

But the Dreamcast is still great.

Sega's Dreamcast was about 5 years ahead of Sony's PS. Pity Sega didn't have Sony's marketing expertise as to how to make a more expensive yet inferior product more appealing to the public. :(
#20
The Dreamcast really was a waste from Sega. It had so much potential. It was the veyron of consoles before an abrupt crash brought it to his knees :(
#21
Completely agree with cabbage. The Dreamcast was (is) a fantastic console. It lasted way longer in Japan than over here. Such a pity.
#22
Dreamcast is still my favourite console i've owned. Spent so long on Soul Calibur, Shemue, Trickstyle, Sega Rally, House of the Dead II and Sonic Adventure! Had loads more games too but ended up selling the lot for £100 on ebay :(
#23
Oh Shenmue and Shenmue 2 oh course, what an awesome game that was! I must have spent hours using that fork lift truck lol! Great, great game!
#24
Also the ease at which it was cracked and allowed bootable games to be downloaded & written onto 10p cd's didn't help. I still have the maraccas for "Samba de Amigo" in my loft. Without doubt, the funnest party game ever made...

100 posts yey!

used to love crazy taxi on the old dreamcast..... still got one (bought it a 2nd time around.... but never played on it.... still in cupboard gathering dust...)

Well, obviously.;-)

But my point still stands - you're not tied to a specific dial-up ISP, unlike Dreamkey 1.0.

This means you can even use a free dial-up ISP!

I was thinking about getting phantasy star online for dreamcast too : )

Shenmue is the best, still sometimes play it now, even my 6 year old daughter loves it. Timeless.

Hello everyone here is a site which explains online playing in a dreamcast and which games are still online.

I got a broadband adapter for it from ebay 2 years ago but Phantasy star Online was shut down on the 31st of March of this year. :(

The only game that is still playable with broadband now is Quake 3 and some others like Maximum pool and 4x4 on dial up.

I agree with you all dreamcast next to my saturn are my favorite consoles ever! :D

Not good because the console is old!
