Free first class rail ticket on GNER

I received an e-mail from GNER (they run trains to places like York and Edinburgh from London). They are testing a new website and are offering free first class tickets for anyone who buys a ticket. There are only 5000 available and I think you have to spend £15 - i have just booked mine. The site is at:

http://tickets.gner.co.uk/gner/en/JourneyPlanning/GnerWebTISHomePage

It does say in the terms and conditions that you need to have recieved the e-mail from them but you never know it is worth a try (i have forward the e-mail to my mates and they are giving it a go). Even if you don't get a free ticket, you still get 10% off like on thier other site.

I used the button on the bottom left to find the cheapest fare available, very neat.

Just been on the site again to book some tickets for a friend as the offer is still open. However, I have noticed there are some £5 fares called 'Devil of an Offer' singles. They seem to have the same terms and conditions of normal cheap tickets (i.e. train specific no changes/refunds) but the have a funny name. Must be some promotion.

I had a quick look on thier other site and they are on there too, so it must be correct.

This offer has now finished - BUT there are a shed load of the £5 tickets available.

Oh, and is the 1st class trip free within the same ticket I want to book or on a different date.

It is explained on the site.
From the Terms & Conditions:
2. You must have made your booking on the new Online Booking Engine between 15 October and 4 November inclusive and you must have made a transaction for a total of £15 or more, for one or more tickets.
3. Only one complimentary travel voucher will be allocated per qualifying transaction. A maximum of 3 separate applications is allowed per customer and the offer is limited to the first 5,000 transactions only. Please check availability before booking.
4. Each voucher entitles you to a First Class return train journey anywhere on the GNER route, for one person for travel between 6 January 2008 and 7 February 2008 inclusive. Please allow 28 days from booking for delivery of your voucher. Reservations for complimentary First Class travel must be made before 21 December 2007.
5. The travel voucher is transferable. Vouchers will only become valid for travel when accompanied by a reservation coupon.
6. You must quote your voucher number when making a reservation. Reservations can be made on any day of the week and are subject to availability. Reservations will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

I got my tickets today but the 1st class tickets/voucher seems to be dated as the same day I intended to travel...

Is this the case for everyone else who did this?

Hmmm... I missed the bit you wrote there czantra!

Thanks to OP. I've just booked myself.

Bit intrigued though as to how GNER are offering free tickets for Jan-Feb considering their franchise for the East Coast line runs out on 9th December.

I love HotUKDeals!!

Newcastle to London Kings Cross, 10th November 2 Adults return - 20 quid! I was just about to book the same tickets off the main GNER website which would have cost £46.

There are loads of tickets for £5 each way on this site taht just aren't avaialble on their normal site. Is there a catch?

I am slightly confused too - and no, I don't need a lie-down - I am attempting to book a return from London to Scarborough. I take it there is no guarantee that I will get a first class voucher and as I am travelling on the 16th Nov, there isn't enough time to receive voucher and reserve comp first class travel. Right?

I thought the 1st class voucher could only be used 4th Jan to 4th Feb 2008.

Hi WoodyRocks - you need to spend £15 on normal tickets. Once you've booked there's a link in the confirmation e-mail that lets you claim the free first class voucher for travel in January and February on the GNER route (not Scarborough though!). If you're spending £30 try adn split it into two separate bookings so that you can get two first class tickets

It's stating this on website,i take it it's finished then?

due to popular demand our complimentary ticket offer is now closed.
