Get a free your free La Fonera for free. They are quite cheap online for a router, but if you are too cheap to buy one yourself, like most of us here :D. They are great, and you're likely to want to get an extra one afterwards. They used to be free from the shop, as a promotion, but that ended,

La Fonera, allows everyone to share WiFi in a secure environment. It takes only five minutes to hook up, and then youve got WiFi at home and around the world for free!

Just email [email protected], asking how you would go about getting one for free. And be nice. I don't think this is one guy's email address, because a ifferent person from Fon replied. I reckon this is a general email address, to put you through to someone at Fon logistics. They will ask you for your name and address to get yourseld a Fonera. It's a great router, only shame is that it does not have a lan port. You could flash one with DD-WRT. I did this to a spare. But I think it may be against terms of service now.

Also, registering the router gets you free access to fon wifi hotspots. Find one here http://maps.fon.com/.

Thanks. For some reason I only thought to post this now. I emailed this address is early April, received a reply the same day and got my FON dispatched on the same day (according to Gmail). Got the FON within the week by courier. I gave it the DD-WRT firmware, quite easy to do when following several tutorials, especially when I didn't have a clue what I was doing.

The router is perfectly fine. I didn't see any danger of bricking when using a Fonera. The only mentions of bricking it is when you hack it like I did :-D. If you do try to hack it but do something wrong it can be bricked, but can be brought back to how it was when you got it. There is no danger otherwise. It is the same as an ordinary wireless router. However it is only wireless (no extra wired ports), so would recommend just hooking it up to an existing router. Also, may I add that if you do not hack you Fonera and use it as you are supposed to, you can register it on FON.com and get free internet access to all FON wifi hotspots (there are quite a few). The reason for this is as an unhacked fon makes a public wifi hotspot. And you with fon can work on a comission basis. If someone wants to use your internet for a few hours, they buy a pass from fon and fon pass money onto you, while keeping alittle for themselves.

So like I mentioned, so worth the money

Ok, just read it on google and thought I should pass it on :)

It's a business, they are making money out of it, just trying to expand their user base. They gave them away on their website for free a few years ago as a birthday promotion too.
#18
Yeah so really you'd expect them to be happy to give them out for free so you can make more money for them. Well I've emailed them, I do like the whole idea behind it and wouldn't mind sharing my internet or earning money for doing so.

Hmm..last time I tried this I failed miserably, but this thread inspired me to try again. After 2 hours I managed to get DD-WRT installed :-D
But it seems they've removed the option in v24 for it to be a wireless repeater? Other than that I really don't have much use for it...oh well...
#20
How long has everyone had to wait on a reply email? :p
#21
Don't know if they work weekends. I got the reply the same day though from some guy called Cruz. The business is in Spain.
