You can receive @gmail.com but you can't compose! When you compose you can only send as @googlemail.com ;-)

Alright.. I told you to refer Bitterwallet post which gives info on this. Since October 19th 2005, people in UK cannot get @gmail.com and this post info is for them, not for users who signed up before that! I have an Gmail since 2004, I have always sent using @gmail.com .. so please relax :)

I added link to Bitterwallet so people to know more info:)

For people who got their Gmail account before October 2005 & after that, please refer the image above. Google has removed the page and replaced with new info.

It was planned to be gmail all over the world, and they did indeed start in the UK with gmail (and some people did sign up in UK for a gmail account).

But then it was found someone else in the uk "owned" gmail so they had to make it googlemail JUST in the UK.

Now they have reached an agreement with whoever owns gmail in the UK, so they can start using it again.

Gmail/googlemail is rubbish. So much junk mail. I suppose it's ok if you want cheap counterfeit viagra though. Oh and a nice gambian man wanted me to give him my bank details so he could transfer a large amount of money that i 'inherited'.

I don't have a problem with this in reality because it's nearly always in my 'spam' folder, which I never visit. Rarely do I get spam in my main folder. I would recommend gmail to people because of this.

I very VERY rarely get any spam to my gmail address that isn't caught by their filters, and have never seen one get spammed by mistake. IMO Gmail is excellent in this regard.

Hotmail on the other hand... chock full of spam, all over the place.

Same here also don't have a problem with junkmail... then again, I don't sign up with every site begging for an email addy with my gmail one (yes, I've always had a gmail one for years now :whistling: ) ... I use my unmonitored yahoo ones for sites or places I don't want junk from.
#22
gmail has the best spam filtering in my opinion, i had to leave my hotmail and yahoo accounts behind because of it but gmail has caught all but one or two in the last 5 years
#23
I have 2 .gmail accounts both old ones, and one the spam filter picks up 99% of the carp and the other one i have NEVER had any spam at all so the spam filter has never been used.

Also when the court action was taken, they agreed that existing customers could keep there gmail.com addy, but new ones would be googlemail.com i am glad mine is gmail and always has been :)

I had a hotmail account first, but it's hard to see genuine email amongst the ****. I find gmail much better and far superior for useability.
#26
I get so much spam on my google account that I have moved to yahoo. Also, you can only tag items on your inbox with gmail but everything still stays in your inbox. Yahoo allows you to create folders to move things out your inbox.

It's 7.5gb and counting up!

+1 for gmail. Best spam filter going. Great IMAP support and free.

And now stickers! What's not to like?

Thank you.

What's not to like?

Hmmm, so they've photographed our houses, collected our Wireless Access Point MAC addresses, assimilated our search histories, got our e-mail addresses and also now have our physical addresses...

I can't think what's not to like. What could possibly go wrong... :whistling:

as long as u all know that google reads your mail and exploits your browsing online, well known fact that google sends its spam to your account based on what u were looking to buy the day before, sorry but thats intrusive and a breach of privacy....

ive also had my house removed from there illegal online map service due to privacy issues u might wanna get yours off there too as the taxman and government will be using it to see what your doing with your house etc incase they can re tax you for more money.

2 of the biggest online tools for finding out about us are FACEBOOK + Google Maps.

always had @gmail.com as well - @googlemail is lame.

Post your address and one double choc chip on its way.

The point is that we know some people got GMAIL addys before Google stopped. Indeed, you could still get one by going through a proxy. However, this will affect the hundreds of thousands in the UK who do have a googlemail addy.
