Still seems Avast (FREE) is topdog.
Not voted either way.

I've been using Avast for the virus side of things for years, moved to AVG (on recommendations from others) for a few months but got fed up with me having to click the pop up advise that an upgrade is available, along with it trying to sell me the full version. Moved back to Avast again and will stay with them I guess.
I also use a few other free specialised programs which work well in keeping my PC clean and safe 8)
malwarebytes.org - their scanner found the evil little files and deleted them.
good for spyware, etc - anti-virus such as avast dont stop all the evil little computer nerds out there !!

Yup, thats another I run along Avast. Adaware is also a good one.
For firewalls, Commodo or Zone-Alarm are options ... irritating program learning curve, but once thats done it's not too bad.
NoScript is a good Firefox plug in to help keep you safe from cross site scripting.
And, if you have kids, K9 Webprotection by Bluecoat is great for restricting them or keeping tabs on usage.
All free of course :)
