Your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 can be unlocked at any time, free of charge. If you unlock your iPhone and put a non-O2 sim into it, you will still have to honour the remainder of the minimum term of your O2 contract.

I have had a pay monthly iphone for a good 6 months or so over the minumum contract length which was 2 years I think. I was just about to cancel the contract and get a crappy cheap phone. Would it be possible for me to unlock this current phone, cancel the contract but continue to use it with some cheap sim?

I understand that Tesco Mobile uses O2 - can this be used with an iPhone bought from Tesco ?

Just did this on O2 chat; first advisor said all i had to do was sync with itunes once he unlocked it at their end but that didn't work. Second advisor said can take up to 7 days to take affect! We'll see!

Also available for a charge of £15 (deducted from phone's credit balance) for PAYG users.

Not sure how that compares with other charges. Does anyone know?

I'm on the Tesco network (existing number ported from O2) and tried this awhile back...two days later at 7am I got a text from O2 stating that my iPhone was unlocked and all I had to do is insert my preffered SIM and activate via iTunes. I haven't tried this yet as I don't have another networks SIM, but from reading other peoples experiences this works (though unsure for networks other than O2).

will this work with a phone I bought from the US locked to AT&T, or does AT&T offer a similar service for the iphone 4?

You can get vodafone iphone 4 unlocked but I think the price is high, around 70 or 80 quid.
