This has to be the best thing AOL has ever done.

Well found!:viking:
#3
It is already in the free software thread but as it is such a good system it should be highlighted, I run it and compared to the rest is far Superior
#4

Noooo don't do it. Nortons is so system hogging and actually not that good. I would always recomend AVGfree or Avast free over just about anything else and of course they are free. Either work very well and will not hog down the pc.

Simon.
#6
cheers for that i'm using avast it's free for twelve months but a second one is alway useful
#7
If I remember correctly..and I have it installed...the updates are for 12 months after installation..after that I think a fee will be requested...not sure but worth checking.
#8
For those who have already subscribed to KAV already - I would just keep the registration code to extend the life
#9
Great find. Kaspersky is one of the best AVs you can get. It's probably the best of all the ones I have used; the only reason I don't use it now is that Kaspersky isn't the lightest on system resources, certainly not the way the I wanted it set up, so I went with NOD32 instead.

But for free, you really won't get much better then KAV.
#10
IE7 says there is a problem with the websites security certificate. Is this OK or are you all downloading a piece of software stuffed full of trojans?
#11
both firefox & IE flag the certificate because its registered to free.aol.com -
I have downloaded the installer & ran a sweep with spy sweeper & also ran virus scan with KAV - nothing was detected.
#12
Still waiting on my activation email

Thanks rated Hot :)

No its the corporate edition which is not system hogging at all. Its actually very good but is expensive unless your company / university pays for it for you!

thanku appriciated
#16
how long to get your activation code :whistling:
#17
I got mines pretty fast but this is now on various warez sites as kaspersky blacklisted a lot of keys (illegal) last month - so the ppl will be flooding the site with requests.

just to let everyone know I run the same antivirus with XP home. I also use IE7 and Office 2007 with no issues at all.
One warning though as yesterday I took it upon myself to see if my PC was suitable for Vista. Kaspersky was flagged as there may be clash with Vista and this. Just a word of caution for everyone!
#19
Anyone managed to get more than one key yet by typing in more than one e-mail?
#20
Kaspersky will be releasing a Vista Compatible Anti-Virus program **v6.0.2.546** currently in Beta stage :whistling:

gary_rip I have a few keys on various emails - to get more serials you need to download the installer again.

Anyone managed to get more than one key yet by typing in more than one e-mail?

Well I have gary as I have the software on 2 PCs....I did this about 3 months ago and used the same email address for both keys...somehow I think that would not be possible now..but maybe it was allowed because I'm with AOL?
#22
I also have two machines and used the same e-mail address
#23
Right, i managed to get 2 keys in the end! If seems after you have put your e-mail in you need to click the download button or the key isnt sent. At least that is what i found.

A big thanks to the OP as i was thinking of buying this. Also thanks to currychops as always a great help!

Found this article @ http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=33&threadid=1982241

AOL has released a free antivirus program to the general public. AOL Active Virus Shield is based on Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 which is arguably the best anti-virus on the market. You're probably curious as to why AOL is offering a $50 AV at no cost. I honestly think AOL is trying to improve their image by not only focusing on pc security, but by offering other premium services at no cost. There are no banners or other AOL crapware other than the small AOL logo at the top of the program window. Although it's a slimmed down version of Kaspersky 6 it retains the most important features. I highly recommend this antivirus; in fact I use it on all of my computers.

# Based on Kaspersky AV v6.0.0.308
# Real-time protection with identical file plus email scanning & detection capabilities as the pay version of Kaspersky AV 6.0
# Lacks proactive defense, web scan, exclusions, and rescue disk creation
# Low resource usage - only has 2 running processes that use between 8-15MB of memory
# Downloads the same antivirus databases that are updated hourly
# Important: During the AVS installation uncheck the option to install the security toolbar since it's based on a product with a questionable reputation.
# Download AOL Active Virus Shield and be sure to use a valid email address in order to receive the 1yr. activation keycode. If you're concerned about spam then use a free spam email account. Lately the key generating server has been flaky so if you do not receive an email with the key try again later.

Tips:
o After you perform a full scan you can speed up the scan times. Open the program or right-click the AVS tray icon-> settings-> scan-> customize-> Scan new and changed files only-> ok-> look under Other scan tasks and click Apply-> apply

o Does it seem like there is a slight delay while windows is loading the desktop? Open the program or right-click the AVS tray icon-> settings-> scan-> Startup Objects-> uncheck Run on system start-> apply

Also does anyone know if you can use the key on the normal version of KAV?
No, it seems not - I use KAV 6.0.0.303, and when I tried this key it just gives a "this key is for a different product" type error and won't accept it. Still very handy though, I'll try it in a VM - my subbie runs out in June, this may save me a few pence! Thanks to the OP, a great find!

You will also need a firewall to keep you safe on the net (I recommend zone alarm or Kaspersky anti-hacker).

Mancunian

The security certificate is flagged because its registered to free.aol.com - there is no security issues with the download (checked for viruses & spyware/adware)
also the ensure you get the registration key you must click on the download button - hope this helps.

Cheers thanks for tip Tru Faith

Hmm, not quite free Kaspersky. This is a rebadged AV engine provided Kaspersky and touted by AOL, who don't have the greatest reputation as a service provider.

Nothing in life is free and is £40 a large sum of money to spend out for peace of mind.
