For windows, linux and osx.

I have been using this for a while and figured that some other people might find it useful so I am posting here. Cheaper than paying for some other software packages.

Prey is a lightweight application that will help you track and find your laptop if it ever gets stolen. It works in all operating systems and not only is it Open Source but also completely free.

Wifi autoconnect
Prey checks if theres an active internet connection to send the information. If not, it will attempt to connect to the nearest open wifi access point available. This gives you a better chance to locate the device.

Messaging/alert system
You can alert the user hes being chased at by sending messages whichll appear on screen. You can also trigger alarms to make the message clear not only to him but also to whomever is nearby. Be careful with this one!

How it works:
Prey wakes up at a specified interval and checks a URL to see if it should gather the traces and send the report. If the URL doesnt exist, Prey will simply go to sleep again. Basically, thats it. This can be controlled free from the preyproject website or you can host it wherever you like.

If you laptop is stolen, log in to the control panel, flag the laptop is stolen, then wait for an email with the link to a screen cap, ip details and webcam picture.

have a read of the software. one of the strong points of this software is that you can customise it fully. as in, rather than have it report the details back to the preyproject website you can have it email or report back to your own website.

the neatest thing is that if you use your own website to control preyproject you can make the client software do anything - say nuking your computer, enabling a keylogger, sending the theifs documents..

a half decent thug: there are numourous instances of tracking software aiding the authorities in catching the thief - but there are more which don't. being free - you arent risking money, but you have slightly more of a chance. it never claims to be the ultimate solution.

also alot of thieves like to have a poke around a laptop before nuking it - they might cc details, naughty pictures, or saved passwords for internet banking. whilst they are poking around you might just get some information from them.

the hardware bios: well technically sure you can bios lock it, but then it doesnt take too long to bypass that these days anyway..

Looks interesting...will pry more!

Maybe a silly question but what happens if your computer is password locked so the only way someone coud use it, is to erase everything and either create a new account or re-format your hard-drive????

p.s. Is it safe to password lock your bios and system or can you do more easily?

Many thanks for any answers, also thanks for posting this software

BIOS passwords and Windows passwords are easily circumvented by anyone with a bit of knowledge. Do not rely on them or this software to protect your data.

Worst case scenario as far as the thief is concerned is having to spend a small amount of time bypassing your BIOS password and having to reformat the hard drive (which they more than likely do anyway to make it look nice and new and not stolen.

As far as this software goes, its a nice effort, and yes its free, but its only software, nothing permanent. So if your laptop gets stolen, you can pretty much expect it to stay stolen. A laptop with an engraving of your postcode underneath the casing (not on a cover or bay!) probably has a better chance of coming back to you than using this.

If they made a hardware version of this, like a car tracker, then this might be worth actually spending money on.

If you are worried about ID theft/confidentiality of hard drive contents, encrypt the drive with a long obscure password. Its not 100%, but its the best option so far.

Truecrypt is a good free one, and open source, so no nasty back door surprises.

If someone nicks your laptop, you'd probably prefer that they reformat it, than go through your stuff to find bank details, passwords etc. If they force thieves to reformat the machine, that's better than them having access to your files.

the software runs as a service, meaning it runs in the background even if the computer is locked and a password prompt screen (login to windows) is showing.

bios and systems passwords = easy to get around, all they would do is slow the theif down a tiny amount. if someone has physical access to the computer they can get in.

rhoobarbs comments are all completely true, this is simply a nice free piece that may (may means might and might not) aid you. no software can protect you fully to recover a laptop. as rhoobarb suggests using truecrypt can protect your data (not your physical laptop) and that too is opensource and freeware.

Heat added,
- Software is free
- Better than having nothing (may be able to catch them before the wipe)
- they will most likely try and see if any data is useful before the wipe
:D

I think this is great - especially if you have a built in camera as it will take their photo and email it to you!

Just remember to use an email account thats not on the actual computer that will get stolen!

Well I've downloaded the software but you have to register on their site to get the KEYS, but when I fill in the form to register I get this error messgae:

"We're sorry, but something went wrong."
"We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly."

I have emailed the developer, but is anyone else getting this?
#23
Thanks for this

Cool thanks :)

Okay I have had an email from the developer 'Tom' and this is now all up and running and I must admit this is amazing.

I'm running OSX 10.6.1 and I flagged my machine as missing. So every 10 minutes as long as the machine is on and has internet access it will take a photo of the user and the desktop and report the Remote IP - BRILLIANT!

QUICK USE GUIDE
1. Download software

2. Register yourself on the site where you will get a unique USER KEY
(remember to use a email address thats not on the device that might get stolen!)

3. Register your device on the site where you will get a unique DEVICE KEY.

4. Launch the software and enter your given USER KEY and DEVICE KEY

5. Test by login back online and selecting the device is stolen and you then should receive an email telling you there is new info online - where you should be able to see the captured data.

cool! that is a good and even better alternative for windows users. locatemylaptop has a nice feature of remote data delete and location tracking too. the only weakness is that it is for windows only rather than osx, linux and windows. still a very nice alternative. h+r for the suggestion.

personally with me being tech savvy i prefer preyproject because i can fully hack it to do whatever i like, but i acknowledge that this is not for the average person.
