Its a pain to register on this site.
You would seriously think they would accept a .sch.uk email address, but no, only .ac.uk :(

I sent them an email asking if they could help.

"Hey there DreamSpark staff,

I'm having problems registering myself as a student on your site.
I don't have a ".ac.uk" email address, and my school isn't listed on the registration page of your site.

My school is called "xxxxx" and my school email address is :"xxxxx.sch.uk".

If you could possibly help me register for an account, that would be great as i'm trying to Get a free Microsoft Certification Exam as a head start to my career when I leave school next year. I already have a Cisco Level 1 and 2 certificate, so this would be a great added bonus.

You can contact me via my school email address by emailing xxxxx.sch.uk , or you can contact me at my personal email address which is [email protected]

Thank you."

Read the instructions.

You will get a code on the screen and you use the code to register for a free exam.

Cool offer but most of these exams are the less popular ones and the majority are being retired this summer.

TimRogers, don't know if you can provide any guidance on this - I'm currently preparing to take the exam 70-515, for Web Applications Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4. I know this offer is only available for exams beginning 072, but there is an exam 072-515 which has the same title (but is half the regular price as 70-515).

Do these exams have the same content? I'm assuming 72 means academic and 70 is normal?

I sometimes see people have titles behind their names such as MCP. Does taking one of these certification allow you earn the MCP title?

Yes, they are.

If you search for the exam here using the 70- prefix instead of 72-, you will get all the information you need. http://learning.microsoft.com/manager/catalog.aspx

Hello. Someone else has already answered this question but I can clarify - the exams with prefix 70 are standard exams, and 72 does indeed just mean academic. The actual exam and its content is exactly the same, and it will still result in the same certification.

Yes, these exams do give you title like MCP and MCTS - as mentioned my i.am.lost, you can read about all of this on the Microsoft Learning website.

Is there anything on the 72 list that someone can learn for, for the end of June? I'm not unfamiliar with computer use; however I have no specialised knowledge.

I'd just like to learn but it looks like these tests (or at least from the titles) are all beyond me. The site doesn't seem very easy to navigate around but are there any modules you would suggest would be easier to learn or just that people with the know how have a shot? I'm not very good with code or making things but I find I like troubleshooting.

Possibly:

072-681 - TS: Windows 7 and Office 2010, Deploying

You will have to look / read into this... hope this helps.

Is this limited to one exam... or as many as you can study for?
#16
The Microsoft Dreamspark page says it's limited to one per person. I'd be interested to find out if there's a way around that, as I'm pretty close to being ready for 072-515 and wouldn't be far off 72-511 as well - may as well do them both at the same time to avoid travelling to my nearest exam centre twice (more than an hour away).

If not, at least the 72 exams are cheaper than the 70 exams and I am technically a student, studying an Open Degree...

Are these qualifications well recognised by employers? Might go in for one..

Not particularly - Microsoft as big as the name seems to suggest is not that big in the software development practice. Rather do something that requires a little more skillful like java (j2ee etc.....) or c++.

You dont need a certificate to prove you can program in .Net.

I was going to do this, I still have access to my student email account and managed to sign up / get code etc... but terms state you need to show valid student ID to the examiner at the test station so I'm snookered as it's expired :(

Hot deal though!

I took the 272 the other day. Got a book for 99p off eBay and read the intros/summaries of the 11 chapters and skimmed through the book for 2 hours the day of the test. A fair bit of 98/XP SP2 stuff I'd forgotten about but all quite common sense. I've worked in the industry for 15 years but never bothered with any MS tests - now retraining as a teacher so thought this wouldn't hurt. Anyway passed easily. The test took me 45 mins of the 140 min limit. Very happy with the outcome and the deal.

Second thing i want to ask with you guys can i use my friend dream spark voucher to give 072-450?

.

I would like to believe you will achieve MCITP after doing the exam.

Not too sure about the friend thing, I don't want to risk getting my friend into trouble, otherwise I would've done it too.

Just wondering, how do we know which is the best one to choose? I have the list but unsure of which one to go for?

Once I have chosen how to do find the resources to be able to pass it?

Thanks,
#27
No such thing as a *best one. Just go for one you are interested in or you think will help with your career. Ebay is good to buy 2nd hand resources / materials. Really it's just a textbook that you need and some background knowledge. Hope this helps.
