Free sat nav app for 50 countries

Went to Florida, picked up hire car at airport only to find no in-car sat nav so then had to hire one for far more than it would have cost to just buy one in Walmart

Solution...

'Navfree is a free app for iPhone and Android. It turns a GPS smartphone into a data-free sat nav, with pre-loaded maps, route planning and voice prompts. It isn't a fully-fledged system like paid sat navs, of course, but it's handy for a one-off trip..store[s] all the map data on-board the phone itself, meaning you don’t need to use your Internet connection to navigate saving you money when you are traveling'

Hope useful - Thanks MSE

I think these are fantastic App's, I'm amazed that they're free and particularly that they works so well offline.
Haven't used this one but have MapFactor:- Android and has the added advantage (for me) that it allows me to move it to my SD Card rather than taking up the phone's memory! X)

Its ok but not that user friendly.
#9
Brill app - would also reccommend.
#10
I used that in florida too, it's quite good for free.
#11
Personally prefer Mapfactor Navigator but this is almost as good.

Very handy app. I prefer Sygic, but then again someone bought that for me. Prior to that I used NavFree.
Best to download & install (especially the maps) before you leave home.
If you forget, make sure you download with WiFi to avoid incurring data charges.

You need to do it from your phone . . .

how much space do you need on your phone for this ?
#15
How does it compare to mapfactor which has a slightly better rating on google play?

I have used this for a while. Its a reasonably good SatNav App. The Pros are (1) its free (2) Maps are downloaded to you don't need a data connection to use it (Excellent when Abroad). Cons: (1) Could be more user friendly - but it does the job.(2) doesn't always take the optimal route - but it gets you there.
UK & ROI map uses 561MB
Italy map 511MB

(This is for iOS)

Anything is better than that if you have no data connection! 8)

a good few hundred MB. Takes ages to download so don't do it just before a journey!

Decent app. Takes a while to get used to the settings but does the job.

Just downloaded, quick signal fix and nice maps. 1 thing I have noticed is when inserting postcode it doesn't give exact street and number availability. Unless there is something Somewhere in the settings.

had this for a while and used it a lot, best so far( better than google maps and tomtom imo). and being data free is great.

NavFree took me down a small lane which turned into a dirt track which stopped at a fence at the edge of a large pond.
(Fortunately, I had the nouse to stope the car, rather than just driving on as it was telling me!)
I ditched it and paid for TomTom.

So many to download like wtf

We used this in Holland last year. It is good as a backup for a map as it took us some interesting routes. It also takes you a different route on the same journey each time which allows you to explore local area whether you want to our not.

Walmart give a 14 day no quibble full refund so I got my sat nav free as it kept giving me wrong information....useful to know if you have the same thing happen to you

It happened to me too. Obviously can't do it for the iPhone 5s I think.

No...but as an offline sat nav it's excellent (as is mapfactor) and as somebody else has said its not always the best route but it gets you there

I have used co-pilot (now premium) for 6 years on my iphones (also loaded on a HTC as a back up using the same account) , paid for it once and have had every update, with no further cost currently £13.49. Recently went to USA and paid £5.49 for the maps of the whole of the USA, I always but itunes cards when on offer. Has every POI needed, may use data if you use the google search tool for some POI's. Its very user friendly, so much so, I left my tomtom which has USA maps at home as I didn't want to leave a sat nav in my car. A mobile phone holder doesnt draw unwanted attention when parked up. I have tested free ones and they are not a patch on the co-pilot, worth paying for as I useit daily.

Navfree is available on Google Play Store....just search for it...should then install on most Android devices

I've used this for quite a while, paid the £1.50 to upgrade so no adverts, but you don't get adverts for obvious reasons when you're driving anyway. Brilliant app in my opinion.8)

I've been using this for a while, but also just started using Waze, which although not offline mapping, does appear to cache the maps (how much I don't know) so if you plan your route (or browse the map a bit ;) ) whilst on wi-fi the mobile data usage is a lot less.
It seems the main advantage of Waze though is that it uses crowd-sourced data, so whilst you use it and select to be 'online' it provides feedback to the waze servers, which are then able to update all 'wazers' on changing traffic conditions etc.
All in all sounds good, but I wondered if anyone else here had used it, and what there thoughts were?

Heat - will be handy! :D

I do wonder about the way this app calculates routes,,,,,,tried it yesterday to visit my Dad & while on the main routes A roads & Motorways it did choose the best routes, once onto the minor town roads it didn't choose the optimum route trying to keep to the main roads rather than the side roads which would have added a few miles into my trip but also about15 minutes through town

Yes it does that, sticks to the main roads even though it may be longer distance and time. If drive onto your own known shortcut, it just refuses to recalculate and wants you to turn back all the time.

For a free app that im going to use about 3 times a year its great.

Link doesn't work for me on my iPhone 5 or iPad.

Just navigate to iTunes and search or use this link:
