I know a lot of Nokia users have been waiting for this one, the Symbian^3 update to help it all run a bit smoother.

Just do a software update, or failing that, type in on the keypad *#0000#, then select options and update.

Nokia has released software update PR1.1 for the new Symbian devices – the Nokia N8, C7 and C6-01. While the new Symbian software offered great performance and features from launch, the updates will make it even smoother to use.

Most of the updated features are not directly visible to end users, but together, they will enhance the user experience of each Symbian device. Both the quality and the stability of the devices will be further enhanced. In addition to numerous tweaks and fixes, there’s also some new content. More details below.

1.Meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations;
2.Maps integration in email, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite.
3.For Nokia N8 users:
a. New Quick Office 6.4 editor version, which offers editing possibilities and allows zooming in & out in Word documents.
b. Three high quality games will also be preloaded on new devices – Need for Speed Shift, Real Golf and Galaxy on Fire. (In some countries, Need for Speed is replaced with Asphalt 5). For current N8 users, these are available for free from Ovi Suite & Ovi Store.
You’ll be able get the update through Software Update on your device or using Ovi Suite. We’re warned that the update may be quite a large download, especially for Nokia N8 users. So make sure you’re on a free WiFi service when you choose to update or use Ovi Suite to install it.

The standard, non-customised version of the software is available from today. Country (SIM-free) and operator-specific variants will follow soon

Goodbye symbian, you never where much of an os but you tried. You did give me my first taste of light sabre phone awesomeness so I could never hate you for that.

Wow, people still buy Nokia phones? ;)

I don't get why people are voting cold (unless its the iphone and android fanboys). This is a great free deal which helps anyone with a new nokia to get a very smooth (and slightly faster) operating system. How can that be a bad thing?

My girlfriend had an iphone which is great but I get so annoyed with it's lack of functionality. Simple things like not being able to send files via bluetooth and the built in maps is useless for guidance compared to the N8's ovi maps. No, Symbian is not dead yet, it just needs some better apps in the ovi store to come up to three same standard as iphone apps but the hardware is superb.

What r u gonna do next year when the only updates you'll get is windows phone 7. Nokia announced that they're abandoning symbian in favour of an army of Microsoft backed handsets. I'd make my choice between iOS and android now cos this is the last you'll be wanting a nokia smartphone upgrade.

as a former nokia fan i would truely say Symbian is dead. it was ok early 2000. even this year i found my n95 8gb from the scrap draw to have done favours and unlock my TV with its IR to enable divx playback from usb... but its a shame nokia are dying...so desperate they have joint forces with windows as meego will be only on 1 device later this year if they are lucky.. so they will put on windows mobile 7 on nokia phones... that should be interesting. the above users a bit harsh they have not tried windows mobile 7 its OK but its too late as the market has no room for it. research in motion should go do the same with android to be honest otherwise bad times ahead for them

Not yet, just lost its way. i ditched my iPhone for Nokia N8 and find it much better in many ways only thing that needs a improvement is the internet browser.
how can they be dead? It still is a better mobile (don't forget this!) than most handsets out there out the moment.
I think the microsoft move was bad for them, they should have joined up with HTC they it would have been bye bye iPhone!

Don't forget that you can buy the add on's to turn it into a freeview tv receiver (not just internet TV) and DAB radio.
OviMaps SatNav is superb, way better than my standalone satnav.
The HD Video recording is amazing (although the HTC Desire HD is now coming close).
Plug a USB memory stick into the side and access files.
Connect it to Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse, and hook up to TV via HDMI and you got yourself a great on the road Word Processor.
and the list goes on...

It should have a program called "SW update" which will do it automatically.
If you can't find this, type in on the keypad *#0000#, then select "options" and "check for updates"

Yes to all of the above! The Satnav is excellent, picks up the satellites quicker than then Tomtom & Navman!
Have not read about the TV receiver but now I am curious!
