Why is this better than the Windows version that's already on your computer?
#3
They now do Version 12, so I'm guessing this is the older version.

Happy with windows Version.

Nice One

Thanks

There is no point to these programs. The Windows one might be a bit slower, but it does the job. All you are doing is adding programs you don't need.

I use the completely free but excellent Defraggler http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

It doesn't do it very well though. Granted, it defragments the drive, so it does exactly what it says on the tin. But the commercial versions put specific files in specific places on the drive, in an attempt to reduce seek times and latency. For example, I believe one thought is to put the page file in the centre of the drive, so that any page file access only has a maximum of half a disc to traverse.

Actually, thinking about it I don't believe the Windows defrag touches locked files such as the pagefile...and that's the file accessed most frequently.

Cheers for that. Was aimlessly wondering around the site looking for where to download it!

Thanks, just what i was looking for!

Just used it for the first time. Don't whatever you do set it to 'Complete/Access' otherwise it'll take hours to complete!
#15
Don't see the point of software such as this. But heat added as it is free software.
#16
If you have windows 7 it's debatable whether this is actually better than the built in defrag - I used it on XP though and it was pretty sweet. I wouldn't go near it now I'm up to Win7 though.

It's actually a good idea to do a 'complete' one first off, set it running overnight or something. You should find subsequent ones are quicker as it's done the hard work up front. :-D

I use MyDefrag which is excellent and free http://www.mydefrag.com/

When you click on register you get three choices, enter registration code, continue trial version or buy now....
Many thanks

You should have been given the reg details in the email, so enter code.

Not only did I find this so much quicker but also very thorough even on the basic settings. Will be trying this on my 250Gb external too.

Heat and rep. Excellent piece of software. Did a long winded research on the best defrag software after realising my options were much broader than the standard windows defrag and this came out on top time and time again. I've been using it for a long while, while it may appear somewhat daunting to the average user it's extra features are great allowing you to silently run it in the background continously or as you require with a variety of defrag modes to suit you allowing you to adequately use your pc while maintaining optimum performance.

great product; just installed and like it already. rep added:thumbsup:

I can disagree with this from personal experience. I used to have a ~3 gig file that Windows (XP) defrag wouldn't touch - this program sorted it out no problem. Really good piece of software and offers a lot of defrag options (defrag by space, to speed up system etc) and an offline defrag option so that files that are always in use by your OS can be defragged. For free I can't recommend it enough.

Granted, I haven't tried Win 7's defrag yet, but this is miles better than that used in XP, and I preferred it over Vista's also.

Windows XP is a 9 year old operating system, it's hardly fair to include that.

Windows 7's internal defrag works much smarter and better, and obviates the need for standalone defraggers like this. In fact, most installable defragmenters actually worsen performance, because of their bloat - , they add loads of startup processes and background services that are constantly running, which more than cancels out any miniscule performance increase they get from their different defragmentation algorithm.

I'd say it was fair as it is the world's most popular operating system at the moment, hence the defragment tool most people are using. The OS is also constantly updated, yet the defragment tool (an old version of Diskeeper's algorithm) has never been touched.

This program adds one startup process which can easily be stopped (to run scheduled defrags), as I used to run it as and when needed. It's a very good product and would only decrease performance on a machine that did not suffer fragmentation of system files in the first place. As for the actual defragmentation algorithm, I shall look how it stacks up to Windows 7's, but so far it's better in terms of customisation and defragmentation types and has a more informative UI.

Be aware - this crashed halfway through defragging my PC and has caused it to go into a constant crash after 10 minutes running. Also - it lost some of my files on my external drive which isnt ideal, probably as it was halfway through moving them when it crashed. Not sure they are recoverable now. It was my acronis backup of the PC as well so cant recover it.

have downloaded this, hopefully it'll speed up our computer, my husband thinks its all my fault that ours is so slow!
How do i set it to complete/access so it'll make everything faster? i cant see the button to customise to make it faster that someone mentioned earlier?
Sorry i am a complete doughnut when it comes to computers!

will vote hot even if it only slightly speeds it all up!

I've been in IT for nearly 20 years and have never had to defrag a drive using windows or 3rd party software.

So whats your point this just means your harddisk is fragmented and not optimised

From within the program If you right click on the drive you want to defragment you should see the options on what defrag method you want to choose.

The STEALTH and SPACE are the fastest ways defragment your files, but the COMPLETE methods provide a more thorough defragmentation but will take a lot longer to complete.

If your computer is running slow you might also want to download ccleaner which is free http://www.ccleaner.com/download
to clear out some stuff on your PC and to turn off some unwanted programs that run on startup.

My point's are twofold, 1: I wouldnt pay for software i've never needed and, 2: Your avatar is better than mine.

O&O Defrag is without doubt one of the heavyweight defraggers. Version 10 is great aswell.
