Not really. It still cost you a printer, coloured ink, photo paper and electricity.

Unlikely they'll be accepted if you do that and if you have to take it to a shop to get it printed it's going to cost you some money, therefore isn't really a freebie at all.
From the IPS website
'Photos produced at home are unlikely to be acceptable, as they will not meet the high standards delivered by professional equipment and may not allow us to capture an accurate biometric, leading to potential difficulties when travelling '

I've printed at home & used for all sorts of purposes like passport, driving license, Oyster card etc.

Not a freebie due to the extra cost.

However VERY cost-saving (£4 - £5 a pop for 4 photo's last time I used them 3 years ago).

It's ok for people with good quality ink, printer and paper, but if you don't then this is bound to be miles better and cheaper!
