Dont get over excited or jealous of those southern softies its not like its going to be a shiny new dell or anything too flash!

The London Mayor Ken Livingstone and not for profit computer recycling company Maxitech have joined forces with Age Concern London in an initiative that aims to open up the online world to London’s older citizens.

So I read that as being 2nd user sytems probably from office upgrades etc, I'm not knocking them ive had some fairly decent spec pc's from a mate who gets them for free in bulk from office revamps and some of them are P4's around 2 years old and half decent machines some though are right dogs, you ever tried shifting 50+ optiplex gx10's with 4gig hard drives and 32mb ram? Even offering on freecycle he only got rid of 1!
#16

Anutha freebie for Londoners

Since £2.27 out of every £10 in taxes raised in london subsidizes the rest of the country I think our biddies deserve something to connect them up.

Besides, retire down souf and you'll get one too bro :-p

In the Backpacker's guide to London it states that you will see more multiracial couples in London in a week then you would in a year in New York.

Leave his comment alone, it's a perfectly valid game. Along with 'spot the peadophile', which is played around schools, parks and children's play areas.
#23
shame its not for all areas but still voted hot

Lots of posts deleted, keep on topic.

NOTHING is ever FREE.

Nice to know where all my taxes go, if they cut my taxes I could buy my own new one.
The other problem with these so called help schemes is the various organisations that make a fortune out of them and the fact that most of these will be sold by people who didnt want them anyway.

Libraries still offer free internet access, and lots of organisations train people FREE for pc use(again paid from yours and my TAXES)
#26
So much for my big long post about tolerance........ anyway I think other towns, cities and councils should possibly consider following along with this although it will obviously mean a lot more idiots using the internet.
#27
presumably you just leave a message and they get back to you about the PC?
#28
hot! but as usual the goodies always go to the cockneys!
#29
It is all well and good giving PCs away to people who have not got one and cannnot afford them (even if they are second hand).

But who is going to support them?

What about when they need help connecting to the internet, or when Windows crashes, or when they want to connect a printer to the PC.

It is the ongoing support that is the issue, not the giving the PCs away in the first place.

Not in London, but hot deal.

Have to tell them about misc on this site and have expert volunteers on hand day and night. Also alerts them to supermarket deals.:)
Good for Ken but only London is a shame. Yes, I know he's only the mayor of London etc etc - you know what I mean.
#32
Ken for Prime Minister!!! lollz!

Its compulsory for companies to recycle computers so it only takes a little joined up thinking to introduce a little altruism into society out of it.
#33
Well, there's a similar scheme for people in Chorley and the surrounding area:

errr hello, not all londoners are cockneys ... :whistling:
#35
Hot pity I Live on Merseside, mind you not 50 yet.
#36
Worth a try for the parents and friends.
#37
Why so much negativity?? Personally speaking....my family (of cockneys!) have lived worked and paid taxes in London for generations, only to be squeezed out, see crime soar and feel unsafe in their own homes, why not actually get something back for their years of input? If this was on your doorstop would it still be a bad deal! Sorry for the rant but some of the comments have incensed me...I shall be helping my parents and grandparents apply - voted hot
#38
sounds gd if from london
#39
have gotten two OAPs from my yoga club sorted with the deal - they well deserve it, hehe. thanks again, OP.

50 isn't exactly old. Most people of this age can expect to work for at least another 15-20 years!

50 years of age is when you can expect to be earning the most disposable income, usually kids are off your hands and mortgages are well on the way to being paid off. I don't get why Red Ken has chosen this age group to benefit from this freebie?

BTW, I'm 48, fit and healthy and unfortunately expect to work for another 20 years, so it's not sour grapes.
