Free PDF To Word Convertor (Online/No download necessary) @ PDF To Word
Sometimes you will have a PDF you want to copy/modify/edit. However they are locked down to prevent editing. This is a great little website that will email the file to you once they have converted it for you.
I don't know if this has been posted before but I have had occasional use for it in the past and have been impressed with it.

Be wary of freeware, be wary of downloading ANYTHING even 'safe' documents and pictures. You could worry about even connecting to the internet.
BUT you are right, be sure not to upload private data such as bank details and addresses and just add a pinch of common sense to anything 'free'.

How do you know a document is 'safe'?
Taking appropriate precautions is part and parcle of sensible internet use/access. Sadly this isn't a consideration for everyone, hence the large botnets spamming the web, amoung other more nafarious activities.
Common sense as you call it, it's all that common.
LibreOffice is open source and multi platform. it has a PDF Import extension, give it a go and see how you get on. LibreOffice can save files in pretty much any format including Microsoft Office formats and PDFs.
I've used pdfzilla which worked well for me, converts .pdf to .doc or .rtf
There's a free trial (8 documents use) http://www.pdfzilla.com/
LibreOffice example:
PDF file (opened in my defauly PDF viewer, not LibreOffice):
Import into LibreOffice:
LibreOffice -> file -> open -> Select PDF file from previous example:
Perfect. 'Right click' -> 'view image' on that last pic to get the full size version.
