iPad, iTouch or iPhone Disk Mode is made easy with Phone Disk. Using your standard USB cable, this tiny program runs in the menu bar or system tray of your Mac or PC. When it finds an iPod Touch or iPhone it seamlessly mounts it to your file system so you can directly access its files using Windows Explorer, Finder and every other program.

For a limited time Phone Disk is 100% Free!!

Until December 1st 2010, we're giving away Phone Disk to everyone for free! If you unlock the software before that date, you get free upgrades and can enjoy the full version of the software on that computer with no expiration (just make sure you enter the code before December 1st)! Use the following registration code to unlock the full version Phone Disk:

How would you like to be able to mount a non-jailbroken iOS device as a disk on your Mac or PC? And what if this capability was (for a limited time) free? My guess is that a lot of you would take someone up on an offer like this.

Developer Macroplant has come up with a solution that runs on a Mac with OS X 10.5 or 10.6, or on a PC with Windows XP/Vista/7, that allows you to view the contents of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Phone Disk lets you open, copy and save files directly on the device, and you can mount multiple devices simultaneously. If you're a Mac user, you see the iOS file system in the Finder, while Windows users can view it in Windows Explorer. The app runs in the system tray in Windows or the menu bar in Mac OS X, so it's out of the way, but available when you need it.

Note that Phone Disk will not give you "real" root access to your iOS device -- the program allows you to access media files (photos, music, and even apps), but system-level access still requires a jailbreak. Still, this is more access than non-jailbreakers can get otherwise -- if you know where to look, you can even pull soundtrack files out of the apps installed on your iPhone.

What's the benefit of this software rather than using iTunes? I've only just got my iPhone.

Essentially it allows you to use your ipad, ipod, iphone as a usb stick and save files to the device.

The key points where this software is good are here - you cannot do the below with itunes: (cut and pasted from website)

Open, copy and save files directly on device
Preview, open, edit and save images, documents and more directly on the the device. You can even access the device directly through other programs such as a document editing program.

Browse the iPhone in Finder and Windows Explorer
Phone Disk provides seamless integration of iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch file system in OSX's finder

Copy images and then view them on device
We've added a custom feature which allows images copied to the DCIM folder to be viewed directly in the Photos app (Mac version only).

Mine doesn't crash but it cannot see anything on the iPod. If I click on the Application Archives folder, it comes up with an error message "Please insert a disk into removal disk (E:)"
and then another message of "E:/ApplicationArchives is not accesible. The parameter is incorrect".
I'm gutted as this look like a useful program.

I couldn't make too much sense of it (a reflection on me I am sure) but while I was at the website I spotted and downloaded the "meta-ipod itunes cleaner", which is also free. This did some good work on duplicate files and more, so in a roundabout way, cheers OP!

Mine does that anyway! I plug in an iOS device and it shows up as one, and I can copy music off and on, as well as other files, and sync music with Rhythmbox. Wow, Ubuntu is awesome.

Been looking for something like this for ages!

Is this software Windows 7 compatible as it will not operate on my machine.

Make sure to restart your PC after installing otherwise the prgram will crash if you try to run it! All installed fine on my Windows 7 64bit computer. Thanks to the OP for posting :)

bare in mind that phonedisk collects and sends alot more information than is needed to their servers during this free period. and that blocking its connection to the internet simply makes it crash on running every time
