Working within the highly sedate and subjective parameters that he developed with his Palme dOr winning Elephant and unconventional rock biopic Last Days, Gus Van Sants latest film documents a few days in the life of 16-year-old skater Alex (Gabe Nevins), who is suddenly forced to place the conventional teenage rites of passage aside (such as high school crushes, his parents divorce, getting in with the right crowd) when he accidentally kills a security guard. This unnerving portrait of disconnection and disillusion delivers shocks and stillness in equal measure, and its eventual lack of an overall message is sure to make it one of this years cinematic talking points.
