It's been posted a few times that I have seen. I have it on my phone as I needed something without any data connection/plan. Supposedly you need data for the routing information but I have used it without and it wasn't too bad. The maps get loaded on to your phone/memory card.

There is absolutely no need for a data connection when using this program except to download the App itself and then the Postcode library and maps onto your SD card. Once you do that you don't need any data connection at all. Google Maps Navigation does require a 3G connection - This doesn't.

Here's a link to a previous post for this, which contains useful info such as Android 2.3 link as wel as Android 2.2 link, etc:

Thanks OP - I'd missed this the first time round.

I have used it a few times in the past to try it out. Within the UK tho, I prefer Google Navigation on android, (especially with giffgaff data allowances :) ) The main reason is that i found navfree to be a bit too sluggish for central London - I felt it was a bit laggy and it's accuracy wasn't too great for built up areas full of small, twisty & narrow streets. Sometimes it catches up my position only after few seconds later. It was ran on a HTC Desire btw.

I think its based on open street maps - i will still use however as a freebie gps when outside of the country! heat added

I use Navfree all the time. Works perfectly without using data. Also note that you can download world maps for the lucky buggers who get to travel abroad.

isnt it always free directly on the android market and appstore

I thought this too, what's the upside of installing it via another source?

    I'll give this a go :)
I've created a QR code as its quicker to download:

I just use the pre cache on Google maps, that way the 3g data is minimal. Worked great in Spain over Easter...
