Saw this last night too. I enjoyed it but it made me feel as seedy as he got. It's not a cheery film, that's for sure.

If you want 'seedy', watch the 1992 Abel Ferrara original with Harvey Keitel.

You'll want to have a shower after watching it ;-)

Hope you enjoy it - don't expect it to be anything like the 'original' it wasn't meant to be - take it as a black comedy and don't expect anything too deep or meaningful

Unlike a lot of the other comments I really enjoyed this - particularly liked the slooooowww pace at times (loved the scene when Cage hallucinates lizards and Herzog shoots lizard close-ups until half the audience is asleep) :-D

Just back from seeing it at Gateshead - it was a load.

Some good bits with lots of slow bits that the film would have been better off without. 2 hours was a tad excessive for this.

The iguana scenes were pointless & what about the aligator cam? What did that have to do with the film?

The best thing was Cage's acting - he played the part superbly.

In case anyone's worried, there are no spoilers in the above. I just found it to be a very strange film.

Saw it at gateshead tonight too, hated it. lots of people walked out. i have never walked out of a film (always expect it to get better!!) but i had itchy feet tonight. Very slow, no action, pointless.

Love cage, expected a great film as he was in it- very disappointed !! :x (so glad i did not pay to see it)

Went to see this last night.............terrible!

Mrs and I left after an hour!...............the cinema was about 95% full, but by an hour in that was down to about 75%........

was looking forward to it as well, but it was an absolute dog!

The iguana's were supposed to reflect Terence McDonagh's state of mind. The fact he was so gone on drugs that he was imaging these lizards...

The movie was shot in around 40 days, and I thought this was Cage's best performance in years in my opinion - I read somewhere that he was ad-libbing a lot of the time. He truly incapsulated his character (as he did with Adaptation, and Leaving Las Vegas), unlike in those terrible action movies he insists on being in.

I think you need to be in-line with Herzog's other movies before you can appreciate it. His movies are a far cry from 'the norm'. Sort of like Lars Von Trier. The movies lack any sort of 'action' (gunfights, explosions, etc) but personally they never seem to make you lose interest.

I thought the iguana scene was quite clever as you say reflecting his state of mind but also replacing the usual stakeout scenes and then bursting into action... ... but of course it wasn't actually meant to represent anything 'significant' - like the alligator-cam and the ending scene it was more of a play on movie 'norms'.

Yes; Cage was great - his character was totally believable and despite being vile you could still like him and have sympathy for him.

Our screening was maybe 60% full - I didn't notice any walk-outs as I was enjoying the film too much to notice - I was quite amazed by some negative comments I heard leaving the cinema, but as Holly commented this film is 'marmite' - I like Marmite.

i watched this screening last..i liked it..was some hilarious bits in it..though did realise i was probably only one laughing in the cinema most of the time lol...the on going property room gag got a bit over used...best moment was how extreme cage got with interrograting and bullying the old dears on his second visit...hilarious!! i noticed a high percentage of oap attendance at our screening..didnt think it was a film my grandma would appreciate! wouldnt pay to watch this as no special effects but defo would hire on dvd.
