Russian director Andre?vyagintsev's first film since triumphing at Venice in 2003 with his debut The Return, 'The Banishing' is a gruelling exercise in technique and atmosphere about a family moving to the countryside and being forced to face up to their shocking past. The director pointedly resists explanation of time and place there and the sublime pastoral photography owes a debt to countrymen Tarkovsky and Sukorov.
