Totally agree, veterans should get this and more. If you've given of yourself for this country then you and your immediate family should be entitled to a higher level of service on transport and hospitals too.

And no, I'm not a veteran...just feel they deserve better treatment.

Title needs amending though as its not for all. I was in 2 Gulf war campaigns and not entitled to anything.

Do you have a War pension or Guaranteed Income Payment under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.

I don't qualify myself, I was deployed for the 1st Gulf war.

Veterans deserve so much more than they get, considering the sacrifices they make to protect us and our freedom. This sort of thing is the least we can give them.

And no, I am not in the military, but have the utmost respect for those that are or have been.

Should be free for all Londoners apart from the MPs.

Oh so free for city bankers?
Oh wait nevermind, they are moving Paris post brexit ;)

It just out of interest, do veterans not get an info booklet containing all this information on offers etc when they are discharged? Would seem foolish to invest in such schemes and then leave them searching out themselves....

This is the important bit:
Ongoing payments are awarded to service personnel who have sustained a certain level of physical or psychological injury in the line of duty. If you received a one-off gratuity payment instead of ongoing payments, then you're not eligible for a Veterans Oyster photocard.
So to qualify for free travel you not only have to be a veteran but you also have to be receiving either a service medical pension or regular payments relating to a service-related medical condition.

Veterans deserve this and more and no I'm not a veteran, any problem with housing they should put them up in Buck palace, they have plenty of spare rooms

How do I get this then? not that I go to London that often but the travel costs are ridiculous so this would be very welcome in deed :)

(I do have a war pension btw!)

I don't remember voting for this

only those injured in the war are entitled to anything. so it should be voted cold. all those that have served should be entitled to free travel.

Not true. Anyone who was injured as a result of service is entitled, regardless of whether or not it was in armed conflict.

How do I apply?
Call us on 0343 222 1234 (TfL call charges) to get an application form. You'll need to complete and return the form with:

A photocopy of your Awards Notification or annual uprating letter from the Veterans UK or the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency dated within the last two years. This will show your entitlement to an ongoing payment under the War Pensions Scheme or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
A passport-sized photo
If you meet the eligibility criteria, we'll send you your Oyster photocard and you can start using it immediately. Please read the Veterans Oyster card terms and conditions.

my point is, current serving or ex serving that haven't been injured are entitled to nothing. I don't think that's fair after their sacrifice.

It is not a question of believing in or liking war.

But it is a sad, tragic and unfortunately real fact of life that even in today's modern enlightened world, there are those from the extremes of the political left and right and from extremist religious groups, that wish to 'take over the world' against the will of the majority. This is done by waging war on us, and not always in the 'traditional' way but more and more in underhand, dirty and sacrificial ways with no respect for life or property.

There are then also various natural disasters and other unfortunate events in the world.

To cope with all these, the only viable way is to have well trained, well disciplined well equipped Armed forces to defend us, fight for us, save us and deal with these other events with the utmost of professionalism, courage and strength.

However, in doing this those in the Armed forces face constant real danger and threat to their lives and health, in a way no other job does. To this end, we should all be indebted to them, as they are the ones that truly and unfortunately make the ultimate sacrifice for all of our good.

For that, we should at least allow them a few extras like free transport to show our gratitude for what they do for us.

A bit naive.
If someone attacked you,I'm afraid you have to defend yourself.
