Fish text is a SMS provider of free texts as listed a few months ago by Zaheer

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/292371/send-text-messages-over-gprs-for-2-/

However you can register for free and you instantly get 20p worth of credit (10 free texts). However texts sent from the fish text application to another fishtext user are completely free and unlimited. Despite the fact this is a damn good service at just 2p per message.

I am currently trying to test the application so I will let you know how the free text works once I know

This is how to set up either phone after downloading the fish text application

How do I send a message to another FishText user free of charge?

You can send messages to other FishText users free of charge if your recipient's phone is running the mobile application with the following settings enabled:

'Allow free SMS' - this can be activated by selecting Settings > Receive type > Allow free SMS
and
'Check incoming' is set to a value of 10 minutes or less

You should also check that your 'Send type' setting is set to 'Attempt to send for free first'. This can be set on the mobile application by selecting Options > Settings > Send type > Send for free first and online by logging in to your account, following the 'Settings' link and changing the 'Send Options' to 'Attempt to send for free first'.

If any of the three criteria detailed above is not met you will be charged for sending messages to another FishText user, as the message will be delivered via the mobile networks rather than via the FishText server.

A comprehensive guide to the FishText mobile application can be found here.

I am using http://www.cbfsms.com, free to any UK mobile.

Too many conditions attached to this one to be hot, sorry.

these services are ten a penny.

I'd suggest this is spam.

If the phone is using GPRS to send text msg thus you are actually incurring cost from the networks of using GPRS. Although very minimal as sms are not that data hungry.
However the 10 min constant check also gets charged.
Unless you are on an unlimited data plan.
In the long run you are better off checking you SMS usage and getting and mobile tariff accordingly.

I totally agree

However if you are a text maniac like me. I am currently on 3000 (Unlimited) texts per month with my contract. However last month I sent around 3300 texts, and the last 300 texts cost me a fortune, so a service like this is perfect to kick in in the odd months I go over my allowance.

Oh I also have unlimited internet as part of my package, so GPRS usage is all in, but I agree this would not suit those without this as much

If they're so common then please give us your list of 10?

Don't forget to include the ones that have a mobile phone application as well, I'm really looking forward to reading your list.

I've got a group of 50 people I'll need to SMS when out and about (with only a Nokia S60 Phone to hand) so I'm very much looking forward to reading your list of 10 other alternatives that will work from my phone and allow me to SMS them for 2p or less each.

I'll be using ASDA Mobile so I will factor in the 20p per 1mb data charge as well.
