Sorry, but I don't see the point of this!

The point is stated in the OP - Dorothy Perkins will plant real tree for every 100 virtual ones.
I think it's a good idea. :)

What's the hard thing to understand?

1. Gather underpants
2. ???
3. Profit

Or something like that. If 100 people spend 15 minutes each using their PC to plant a virtual tree, then they'll plant an actual tree.

Hmmm, my PC uses roughly 150 watts of electricity, so 100 similar people taking 15 minutes each to plant a virtual tree will use 3750 Watts.

Now 1 kWh of electricity produced from a coal powered station emits 0.97kg of CO2, so the activity of planting an actual tree via the virtual route will produce 3.64Kg of CO2. This neglects the costs of transporting the tree to the plant site.

A 15 year old tree will absob roughly 3-6Kg of CO2 per year, based on size and type. Smaller trees produce much less, perhaps even negligable. And the mortality rate of trees in the first year due to disease etc is about 10%.

Conclusion? It'll take quite a few years for this to reach break-even point. Is it worth it?

Nice idea, but more spin than actually saving the planet. Better off planting your own tree.

great idea i think.planted my tree:)

Why cant they just plant the trees anyway - Why do they need my name and email address. Oh wait, Sales and Marketing!

If this exercise raises public awareness by even a just a tiny fraction, then it's totally worth it. Everyone gets to benefit eventually. Make a change from grabbing freebies for the sake of it IMHO.

Typical, people can't see what’s in it for themselves so have to crap on everyone else’s parade. Voted hot & tree planted. :D

Maybe you could use it for fertilizer for the virtual tree!
