Sounds too good to be true? Where is the catch and how do they make money?
#6
Nice one.. thanks.

This is great for me. I run a part time business and so I use this number. It goes straight on to an answering machine which gives people my mobile number. If people leave a message it emails it to me so I can catch it anywhere.

great service
#8
Yeah, quite good one, will be useful for me while travelling!

In 'Call' click on black band at the top (should say Skype Out/Numbuzz Out) - go to SIP -> down down down to Sipgate.DE ->enter yr sipgate account info

You now have sipgate to use on your iphone as an alternative to Skype should you want that.
#14
setup is free, voicemail is free, in fact when you set the account up IT DOESNT EVEN ASK FOR ANY PAYMENT DETAILS, JUST USERNAME, NAME, ADDRESS ETC ETC , THATS IT, LANDLINE NUMBER FOR FREE WITHIN 10 MINUTES!! (and ten minutes is being conservative).

think about it, there is no catch, they make money if you buy credit, or sign up to a tariff, calls to your number cost the same if not less to a normal landline number, so its a bully bonus.

anyone can ring you, and they can give it for free as they dont have BT to pay for any of the POTS systems., it all goes over the internet.

So that people can call you out of their inclusive minutes on mobile or landline for free?

This is a geographical number, not 0870!

Have had one for years, no catch, they make money if you buy credits to use their outgoing call service too. Free voicemail, email notifications of messages. Ideal for Virgin Media customers who take broadband only without a phoneline
#16
I have used them for years. They are pretty reliable.

PRO - Free landline number, incoming is free. Ideal as an 'extra' line. If you are looking primarily for an incoming line - this is a no-brainer. Also free voicemail (email to your PC too). Forwarding (you pay the normal rate - 1.5p to another landline or 9p to a mobile. Works anywhere in the world. Great when people think they are phoning a London number and you are overlooking the Med!

CONS - You can get cheaper outgoing VOIP rates. Because of the freebies above this only makes it a bad deal if you are making a high volume of calls. Oh and they don't allow free VOIP from other networks.

Yes but better than that too - you can take the call to answerphone, check the wav in email at a wireless point overlooking the med and phone them back on voip at 1p a minute. 1p I think you will find is way way cheaper than what your network provider would charge you per minute to answer the original call.

It's a class deal this.

A question for people who've tried this - Can I use this as follows?:

Does the PC software have to be running for this to work? Or can I sign up, give people the number. They call and leave voicemail which gets emailed to me, and that's all I use it for?

Does it take long for the voice mail to be emailed or is it immediate?

You don't need any PC software running. What you propose is fine, and you get emailed immediately.

0845 and 0870 are numbers that charge a flat rate (10/20p or something like that). My guess is that sipgate just pocket that extra revenue.

I work from home, so getting an 0870 number for my business makes me look that little bit bigger!

you can use it with a softphone, i.e software on your pc, sipgate give you a verions of x-lite.

or get a voip phone, plug it into your network and add the sipgate details.

or get a dual phone (not the rtx dual phone they are crap) for instance siemens gigset a580 ip (theres a deal on here for amazon) this let you use your landline number and your sip accounts.

or record your voice mail message and just have people leave you messages that get emailed to you.

only pre-requisite is that you have a broadband connection, and hardware that is capable of using sip, i.e. pc, voip phone etc etc

i`m calling virgin soon , they can keep there package, just want broadband, my phone will allow me 6 sip accounts so ideal fro online buisiness.
#29
I have been using Sipgate for about four years now as my only 'landline' on a PAYG basis, so it works out very cheap as there is no monthly landline charge.

In fact I got a Sipgate preprogrammed Netgear ATA for £10 from Staples at the time, plugged into that is my BT / Siemens DECT phone. I also use a softphone on my laptop for when I am away (X-Lite for XP and PhonerLite for Win 7 also apparently works with Vista and there is another softphone for Mac's). Would recommend a headset and boom microphone for this type of use, not tried a USB VoIP phone.

You can also set-up some mobiles like the Nokia E60 but I found it does not ring on an incoming calls, this appears to be a phone issue which Nokia never did sort out and not a Sipgate issue. But don't let that put you off I sure other mobiles do work correctly just happens I got the E60 for free from work

Service is not 100% reliable would say about 97% overall, using it on my Virgin cable BB connection. Note my number is a geographical number.

It's not an 0845 number, it's properly geographical.

This is blinding stuff!! Now I can give friends and relatives a local number to be able to contact me while I'm travelling in China. Even my mum can handle calling a local number :-D

H+R for deff! Thanks OP.
#32
I have set up an account and opted for a 0870 number. Now what can I do with it? Can people call me on that number?
#33
This is properly awesome:

1. Set up a LOCAL number on Sipgate
2. Install Nimbuzz on my Nokia N97
3. ??????
4. Profit = INCOMING CALLS TO A LOCAL NUMBER DIVERTED TO MY MOBILE FOR FREE! (well included in my free internet bundle on my phone)

Serious H+R

PhonerLite said it was OK for PCs up to XP and Vista. Looking for some software application more appropriate for Windows 7, I came across its big sister Phoner. The only difference appears to be the built-in answer machine. Cool!

Worth pointing out that although there are cheaper VOIP-out providers than SIPGATE (when making calls) to my knowledge sipgate is one of the few that actually allow you to call some of the new -fangled numbers replacing 0870.

The cheap ones let you call 0845/0870 ... but not all of the 0871 numbers or all of the 0845 replacements. I looked into this a while ago and was told that sipgate DID support this.

Even though they're not cheapest for outgoing, they're not extortionate either.
#36
i keep gettin error pop up ballon -
a network cable is unplugged any ideas ? when i start sipgate x lite

How do I fix a problem with 'one way audio'?

CHECKED the website but dont understand all the info.
help!!!!
#38
If you are taking voice calls over VOIP on your mobile im sure the quality of the sound is going to differ a lot. I know that on the three network you can't even make sykpe calls if you are on a GPRS network as appose to a 3G network.

Sipgate Its a great service don't get me wrong but this countrys telecoms infustructute is way behind that of America they have 4G out there as well as Google Voice.
#39
I have used this for a few years now and apart from a couple of outages in the early days it is very good :) I use it as a second line when I want to dial any numbers that are not included in my landline quota :) I have a linksys SPA-3102 adapter with a couple of dect phones on it. The voice mail is also good, espically with the email function. I have also used ths along with voipstunt which gives free calls and have a dialing plan setup on my linksys box (ie dial 9 for a local number :) )
