FREE Windows 7 Public Beta from Microsoft website

May not be everyone's cup of tea, but the new Windows 7 Beta is being released on the 9th Jan 2009 afternoon (By this I assume it will only be available at Western US noon time). Apparently it's only valid for the first 2.5 million downloaders and the beta is valid till 1st Aug 2009.

From the Microsoft website -

Windows 7

Over the past few years, you've asked us to make some changes to Windows. We listened closely. Now it's time to share an early look at how we've used your feedback. Windows 7 is faster, more reliable, and makes it easier to do what you want. Both the everyday things and the killer "is that really possible?" things. Dig into this site to see what's coming. Want to try the Beta? Come back the afternoon of January 9. And rememberthis is just a preview. There's more to come.

A Beta? Fear that!
Personally I'd wait till at least the first service pack is released for the "full release".
The amount of bugs in the Beta's, not being able to run certain programs, not worth the hassle.
#2
As it's a beta i wouldnt' recommend replacing your main OS with it. Put it on a VM or a 2nd partition to have a play.
#3
This has been reviewed by numerous places when it was leaked a month or so back and found to be a much more complete beta than previous versions, almost close to completion :)
#4
still havent got round to Vista yet, will buy a laptop in the near future so this will prob come installed by then
#5
I have it installed on one of my laptops and its pretty stable and guess what?? I prefer it to Vista!!

Can anyone tell me How I can get it to run till August? My beta expires in another 20 days!

Any help appreciated.

very helpful. thank you

I think I will do just that...who knows...maybe the hackers might even be able to turn off the trial end date.

Whats the equivalent uk time this goes live?
#13
Read and seen this in action. A lot faster, better than Vista and many people tried Window 7 really like it. It just a trial though.
#14
Vista was a disaster, no wonder they're rushing to get Vistas replacement out asap. Probably to give them an excuse to drop support for XP. Though that would also be a disaster, because the majority of people still use XP.

With this, and the Xbox 360 being retired soon, microsoft seem intent on shooting themselves in the foot as much as possible.

vista was Bill Gates's leaving time bomb, he'll be wetting himself at how bad it turned out!!

so bad I have just this minute ordered a new XP pro based laptop as I have had enough of the vista rubbish I've been using for th last year.

as for windows 7, wouldn't touch it until at least a year after it's full release, I'll let others be the paying guinea pigs this time.

Depends if your processor is 64bit or not. If in doubt get the 32bit or post up the model of your CPU (processor). Server is still busy for me atm though guess it's being hammered.

Anyone got through yet? Still getting server is being hammered.

Why is this expired? Can somebody "un-expire" it? I only found it because I was going to post it too. (you beat me to it by quite a while though)

As for being hot, this is absolutely free, so how could it be cold? It is a beta, ok, but most deals only interest a portion of the people here, and honestly I am extremely interested in this one. If this deal is not for you, that doesn't mean it should be cold! By doing so you might be depriving others of that opportunity who would otherwise be interested, as the post might not reach the 40 degrees that will grant it the front page slot it deserves.

Important:
BETA means that you should only use this if you know what you're doing, if you're not too sure then it means you should keep clear.

Last time round with Vista, Microsoft gave away free licences for Vista Ultimate to everybody that reported bugs as a way to say thanks. Nothing says that this time they will do the same but it's worth trying, if nothing else.

As for whether Windows 7 is good or bad, remember, this is not the point here, as this is really aimed at a specific type of users that will know already what to think for themselves. Personally I downgraded from Vista after a few months but Windows 7 can be thought of as a finalised and more stable version of Vista with the footprint of XP. As a matter of fact I've been running the pre-beta and found that even at that stage it was already more stable than my cursed copy of Vista...

Anyway here's some heat and also some rep' to say thanks...

Hopefully MS have checked this release works a bit better than their servers do!

Server Unavailable, 404 errors, typical MS rush job.

The IE8 team get most of their ideas from Firefox, perhaps they should have passed on the secrets of how to do a good launch to the Win7 team :-D MS say only 2.5m available yet Firefox managed much more than that in one day !

I like Vista too. I got it when it first came out and it was useless because there weren't any drivers for it, so I couldn't get my computer to actually do anything, plus a few pieces of software I use often were incompatible. But I tried it again a year later and by that time most devices had Vista drivers available and there were enough patches to get everything working. Since then I've switched to using Vista Ultimate 64bit on both my desktop and laptop and I find it much smoother and way more stable than XP ever was. The teething problems were to be expected because it was an OS built mostly from the ground up, not directly based on a previous version of Windows like XP was, although the bad start has probably given it a bad rep in general now. People forget that XP was just as bad when it first came out because it was the first consmer orientated Windows that wasn't based on DOS, but rather Windows NT, and so a lot of programs that people had been running under 95/98/ME wouldn't work under XP, and there was a similar wait for drivers to get hardware up and running, although such problems were sorted out much faster in XP's case because it was similar to Windows 2000 before it.

The only thing I can't get working on Vista is my old scanner - but that's Canon's fault for only making 32bit Vista drivers for it and not 64bit! It may be a bit of a resource hog, but that's to be expected from a new OS and as both of my computers are relatively powerful it's a price I'm happy to pay for the stability. Hopefully Windows 7 will simply be a much improved version of Vista (the Windows 98 to its 95). I'll try it out if I get a chance...

Damn they was last night as I grabbed both.

32 Bit is for 32 Bit processors (or people who have 64 bit processors but don't want/need the 64 Bit functionality) So its suitable for all processors really that meet the required specs,

whereas;
64 Bit will only work with 64 Bit processors.
#37
@harlztter

Any chance you can host them somewhere? Rapidshare maybe? How big are the files anyway?

Each one is something like 3.15GB

By the time i'd finished uploading them they will likely be on the webs anyway:thumbsup:
