Just read about this is a PC mag and had a quick look on the net, it looks amazing and its totally free.
It only supports Nokia phones at the minute but more handsets will be supported very soon.

Have a look, you wont be dissapointed.

Just checked the site out. If you don't have a Nokia phone don't worry as you can register and they will inform you when your phone is supported.
Looks good!

This should actually work on other Symbian 9 phones, such as the Sony Ericsson P990, W950, M600, etc. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Also, "Free" is a misnomer unless you have free data as part of your call plan, which I'm guessing 99% of people won't have. Worth looking into the details of the true cost.

I think this type of thing will only become more common in the not so distant future.

I have fring on my N80, and currently use it to manage my MSN, GTalk, and skype contacts all from one app. It also allows you to access your mobile's contact list - which means you have easy access to any international numbers you may already have. You can also add a VOIP service too (I use VoipCheap, with no problems). This means that I can talk/chat to four different services from one place - and still make regular, normal GSM calls too (as per usual).

I don't use the networks data plan (I'm on three, and I am not yet on their X-Series plan), but do use my home WLAN to VOIP. It's pretty cool, and simple to set-up. Voip calls are a little echo-y but very useable.

Apparently, an hours VOIP call uses up about 8MB (info from the fring forums, not sure how accurate that rate is).

so it just free calls to other fring users not land lines?
#5
yeah its not quite true the subject title, its not free to anyone anywhere.

To be fair, if you want a better deal for free calls to land lines till the end of june, check out truphone, http://www.truphone.com/

Truphone doesn't support as wide a range of phones. It looks like Fring supports the N80 without needing to flash the firmware (and void the warranty) as Truphone requires. It is free with a wifi enabled phone which is exactly what I was looking for. Voted hot and rep added, cheers.
