Just thought it'd be useful for some HUKD members to know (I'm sure everyone does know already) that a number of banks offer the full versions of various anti-virus/firewall security suites for FREE.

If you bank with Barclays they offer 1 of the best security suite's on the market, a 3 user licence for 1 year (is renewed each year when the latest version is available)

http://www.barclays.co.uk/Helpsupport/FreeInternetsecuritysoftware/P1242557966961 - gives you all the info you need but you must be an online barclays bank customer. This will provide you with a 3 user licence of Kapersky Internet Security Suite 2011 for 12mths for FREE and/or Kapersky Mobile Security 1 user licence or if you own a MAC (are there any out there?) then they can have the Kapersky Anti-virus s/ware - but i thought the Mac had no viruses?

http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/online-security/security-software;jsessionid=0000V6_wInAFOq9dbiLaPcWJ6vQ:14f64qtba HSBC offer both business & personal account users McAfee Security Suite for 12mths for FREE

Is there any need to purchase A/Virus s/ware when you can get FREE? More than likely a number of users will comment on AVG, Avast or Avira (we shouldn't forget Microsoft's Security Essentials suite either) but in all the online reviews none of these packages come close to the paid for versions. BUT if you don't bank with HSBC or Barclays and need a decent security suite for your PC then BANK with them, deposit £1 open up a current account & download your FREE PC protection.

Otherwise if you're averse to banking with barclays or hsbc then download any of the following (all free):

Comodo full internet security suite - http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php

AVG only a/virus however - http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download.prd-afg

ZoneAlarm free firewall protection - http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm

Spybot Search & Destroy - spyware protection - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

AdAware spyware - http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Rapport is also available FREE via HSBC - a useful addition to your security arsenal.

#6
I had McAfee for two years and found it was more trouble than it was worth using(Vista).I like Microsoft Security Essentials.

A good post - but who's going to open a bank account just to get Anti Virus software for free?
#12
AVG is actually not too bad, for those who are looking for a free solution.

I haven't got a Barclays current account but I do have a Barclaycard. Does anyone know if I'm still eligible for the Kaspersky download at all?

How can you vote cold as only 2 of the largest banks are offering FREE full copies of decent anti-virus/firewall protection software

It's like voting the free Amazon voucher codes for Keynoir as cold as only 1 company is offering them

Strange voting by some members must say, thought this was a good post to get FREE protection for our pc's

I'm with O2 and I tried MaAfee and it was awful. Switched to Kaspersky (free from Barclays), so much better.

It may just be me but........ who would open a new bank account just to get free anti virus, someone says they would because the anti virus is good to get free. to me a bank account is something to be secretive about, and not just open one willy nilly, would they really go through all the paperwork, and hassle just for £30 security!

and the free amazon code thing i saw but didnt even click what it was about, can u imagine all the freebies sites it would have been posted on, here and mse, and magic freebies, and all the others?. oO talk about milking a offer, i didnt bother!

i like norton anti virus :) tried mcafee, and its ok, but... hmm i dont know but norton is better, and i know people hate it, but i think its good and simple to use :)

remember once you've gone thro' the trauma of setting up your bank account the security suite is free yearly. so you don't need to re-apply for a bank account, so yes it's a saving of £50 in the case of Kapersky which i personally feel is by far & away the better package

NIS2011 & 360 - have an extremely small footprint compared with before but on a number of occasions my work pc got spyware installed without my permission. this disabled nis and req'd a complete re-install of NIS then going via safe mode to remove the culprits. NIS also stops a number of programs loading as it feels they are security risks (and i don't mean torrent progs - these are work progs similar to Sage). There are workarounds which i've had to use for the work pc. At home - NO issues Kapersky is brilliant and a small footprint, low memory useage etc...

Would I install McAfee - no-chance used it in the past and felt it was NWare/Bloatware. Thankfully Norton have learned from their symantec days (or was it dr solomon's?) and produced a better product - but would i personally pay for it compared to KIS2011 - NO! (sorry that's my take on it all)

Markvirgo - if you bank with barclays then go via their links & you will get a renewal code via them!
#28
wow brilliant - my expensive one just ran out! :)
#29
nice deal :)! my dad is with hsbc and girlfriend with barclays so i will see if i cab have mcafee and norton :)! my current mcafee sub doesnt run out til february so il read reviews and see which is best (or if i should just get a free version) and then just give the other ones i have spare away, seems good to me :)!

I tried it too. Got sick of it after a week. Too slow and clunky, that was 18 month's or so ago, the latest version might have improved? i got Kaspersky 2009 via one of the works deals on hukd. Kaspersky 2011 seem's good so far nice & fast, little footprint
