Can we get away from Ebay if google have a free offering?

Partly just to see what the response is here (and since I can't build up a single buyer on PlayTrade).

Personally I am trying not to use Ebay again as they are really starting to rip people off with their restrictive practices, (i,.e Paypal, or else), and the huge fees they charge. Not to mention the postage charges by the sellers. Oh, and the buyer scams. So any alternative would be welcome. I have recently been using Amazon Marketplace, which isn't bad.

What is Google Base?

Google Base is a place where you can easily submit all types of online and offline content, which we'll make searchable on Google (if your content isn't online yet, we'll put it there). You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they do related searches. In fact, based on your items' relevance, users may find them in their results for searches on Google Product Search and even our main Google web search.

A major component of Google Base is acting like a online classified ads service

It's just full of business mainly and the search is awful. Not good.

I thought it was just me. I can't find anything to buy that's not from Play or, confusingly, Ebay through their search. Can we just stop the idiot OP posting these things?

dont complain! its free isnt it?!

and besides google is a powerhouse (and have there own payment system with google checkout) and when they go through this on a widescale, ebay will be no more

Definitely a good start! If Google can build a viable option to eBay, with the normal Google attitude of "let the advertisers pay" eBay will close down within a month. Sellers are SO fed up with eBAy's policies and exploitation of its market position. Nothing personal againt eBay, its the same for all companies that got themselves into a monopoly position and then squeeze their clients who are the core of there succes. The wheel turns.....

google base has been around for YEARS, if it was ever going to take off as an online auction system, it would have by now.

Its not about who pays, its about the insane job of moderating all the listings and transactions that go on. If google were ever to launch an ebay rival, which I doubt they ever will, they'd have to be absolutely sh*t hot on the administration side of things to migrate users away from ebay. Its a massive undertaking and they'd risk public opinion turning against them and becoming 'the bad guy' like ebay has.

ebay WAS great, but their business model was never scalable so when things really took off the system fell to bits, but by then they'd cornered the market - like any other major company, they know they'll make enough money to not really be concerned with a handful of people getting ripped off.

Being google, the same search principles apply. If you want to filter out ebay listings add "-ebay" without speechmarks, to your keywords box

Lets say for some reason I'm searching for Police Academy DVDs, I would put the following in the search or keywords box:

Police Academy -ebay -play

if there are other retailers coming up, just use a portion or the entire url of where the product is being sold from and add it to the list of things you don't want showing up. Inversly, if there is a retailer you would like definately like to see results from, you can change the minus signs into plus signs:

Police Academy +amazon +play -ebay

to be fair about postage charges from ebay sellers, you have to make sure u charge the right prices, i agree some people rip off but i sell lots on ebay and even when i undercharge on postage people still mark me down in the feedback and i always offer recorded delivery for people
#13
ebay are **** at moderating listings of fake goods, dodgey cars and the like but try to do them out thier fees and they are all over you like a cheap suit :x

It's a start, but it still needs a lot of work before it becomes an alternative to eBay for me.
#15
don't use ebay like i used to. Sellers gone too dear and postage!

...eerrrrmmmm.....

yes....sort of.......

Problem with your logic is that EBAY signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) WITH GOOGLE 2 years back and now their (being ebay) items are placed over and above all others because ebay PAY for the privilage.

The only way ebay will bite the dust is if someone who can personally take up the fight (please Richard Branson PLEASE) and people flock to his call.

and for another post above this one Amazon is okay but thew fees actually work out MORE and they have the auto-fund ability where they take the money from the seller and give back to the buyer BEFORE he returns the item - at least with paypal (and i HATE THEM TOO) you have a chance of keeping the money.....

Im always looking for better ways to sell stuff other than ripofbay and ripofpal keep them coming!
#18
same here with the postage and ebay really need to lower there fees its getting to be a rip off payed £2 finale value fee on a sale of £19.99 not pleased......................
#19
i'm sick of ebay - would gladly use a cheaper alternative, already do amazon trade as much as poss, think ebay now not worth it as you can find stuff cheaper from reputable retailers! every now and then i give in and use it again but always disappointed - someone could make a mint starting up a cheaper alternative the way ebay used to be when it started (before it got greedy!)

i wanted to register to sell on ebay but they need a visa card , i have debit card just not visa so i cant register which is rubbish, so anyone know of any sites lol
#21
Ebay uses Paypal which is awful if it ever comes to returns, as you can provide proof of registered returns, even signatures... but if the seller does not refund the money, Paypal will ALWAYS side with the seller and not return your money either.

I've had over a years worth of communication with a seller and Paypal, but the seller refuses to give a refund until I remove feedback about fastmemoryman aka Esmartbuy con-scheme of sending faulty items from the UK and asking for items to be returned to the USA for a refund!
