IPHONE 4 - Free Apple Bumpers in the UK!!

Free Apple Bumpers in the UK!!

Apparently, according to a BBC 5Live interview today, iPhone 4 users who go to the Apple store to complain about the 'left hand lost signal phenomenon' are being given a free Apple Bumper to alleviate the problem.

Post on this thread if you have success in getting one.

I did wonder when first seeing the bumper exactly why it had been designed to only protect the edge. And, AFAIK, it's the first time Apple have offered a 'case' for sale with a device.

This suggests that Apple was pre-empting a known problem.

These bumpers retail for £25, so are not at all bad for free

I agree mate, if this went HOT then it'd be great for all those people who DID get the new iphone so they could be aware of getting something for FREE.
Surely things like this are what this site is supposed to be about.
Rant over :p

Giving away a free bumper doesnt make it ok. All the iphone owners signed up to a phone that was meant to be super slim and nice looking, but now they have to put a big rubber band around their phones to make it function as well as a sub £100 phone? i would be ****** if i owned one.

I think the mods should do something about these kind of threads, it's getting pretty tiresome when the haters/trolls habitually post on threads about apple, ps3, xbox etc etc

I agree - I hate people that post for no reason

Maybe you could add to the post that these bumpers retail for £25 from Apple

I brought one of these bumpers when I got the phone and they are great. If dropped, the bumper takes the impact and I haven't noticed any drop in signal quality when picking up the phone.

Voted hot as it may help people get a phone that can work as a phone.

Apple's arrogance is beyond belief. Complete lack of respect for their customer base.

i have no probs with my iphone 4 yet all is good

Soooooo glad I went HTC - mmmm flash.....mmm ability to use it to make calls....
#12
It's a solution to a design flaw. Apple should give them FOC to all purchasers of the iPhone 4 and not just to those who complain, especially when Apple stores, for many are quite a distance away.

Oh, by the way guys, just don't feed the trolls...

I think poeple are voting cold for this based on the fact that it is correcting a design flaw... ie, it shouldn't need them in the first place, so giving them away free simply to make it work as it should ( albeit looking a little sillier) is the least that should happen, hence why should it be a 'hot deal'?
#15
I will go into Apple this afternoon and see if I can get one, mine definitely loses signal when i hold it in my left hand. Thanks for the info.
#16
Thanks also. I'd ordered one via the apple store. Emailed them!

Yes, oh dear, because video over 3G was so popular, at about 50p per minute.

At least they are sorting.
Also it appears that it may just be a software problem, as 3GSs are affected too.
#18
Not voting either way though I think bilbob is spot on, it's hardly a deal when it's 'fixing' a flaw with the phone.... I'm just amazed at the amount of people spending £500+ on a phone who haven't bought some kind of case to protect it in the first place! All those sensible folk who did should be going straight to Apple and asking for a refund on it now though ;-)
#19
Great find OP, Heat added. I'll let those around me know.

It is just what all those poor sods who bought the 4G need. Yes its a deal and deserves to be hot but as pointed out it should be free for all as at the moment it is very expensive item not at its best due to its design flaw. I am so glad I dropped out of the 'innovator camp', best to let faults and upgrades be found first I think.

I hear Toyota are teaching drivers on how to drive their cars rather than fix their braking / acceleration problems.
#20
It's a good deal from me. Massive oversight from Apple, I bet there are some design engineers looking for new jobs this week! It won't stop me buying one though. Most people use a case for it any way so maybe Apple considered this.
#21
there are many phones that have this issue, is you search for them,

nexus

nokia

apple response "Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases"

these cases are free from apple accoding to OP. so heat added.

if you want one get one, if not dont.

same goes for a i phone.
#22
This isn't a deal... this is compensation
#23
Definitely a triumph of style over substance.

Surely a phone should be designed to be reasonably protected without additions - not to mention at least work? My ipod classic casing IS too slippy, therefore badly designed - but not according to Philippe Starck (in one of these brown nosing TV design programmes) who said an grippy external skin wasn't required. Has he used one in daily life for heavens sake? Didn't the designers actually use the new iphone??

If it is £25 for a iphone bumper full retail - you are just simply MAD!!! What is the old saying about fools and their money....?? Think one for my wee Samsung was 99p.....
#24
Well done to the OP for trying to help people out :)

What email address did you use?

the cheek, after you spent £500 min sim free - £1000 on a 2 year contract Steve Jobs says to not hold the phone like that / you're holding it wrong or buy a case. The cheek, you can see they designed the case for a problem they already knew about. Then they wanted to charge you £25 for the fix, which is a piece of rubber / rubber band

Whats this? Apple you're holding it wrong in your adverts to lol I wonder if this is why Steve Jobs couldnt connect to wifi at the conference

I have an Apple 3GS and have the 1G before that, but I can't believe this is being voted hot. It's not a deal, it's a clumsy fix for a design AND testing flaw. I can't believe people think it's a good deal for an accessory when the main thing (the phone) is causing the problem....

Android here I come

Actually, last time I was with 3, 25 minutes of free video calls was part of the monthly package. Not that it was ever especially useful. I think I used it all of three times ("Hey look, I'm in a field!", "Hey look, we're taking drugs!", "Hey look, it's working! Can we get back to eating our dinners now, we've only got 15 minutes left").

Wasn't the metal frame supposed to solve a problem with loss of signal?

In fact, it was more a substance over style design that has a flaw. Having said that, I get a stronger signal on the new iPhone compared to my 3gs unless I cover the antenna.
#30
A hot deal LMAO.

Anyone who thinks it is must be voting through very gritted teeth.

Great laugh though :w00t:
#31
So does anyone know if these bumpers actually help reduce the loss of signal or not? Also voted hot :)
#32
Voted hot as its free, im goona get one as well even though I dont have an iphone 4, I love free yipeeeee!
#33
i also think that Apple should, at the very least, be giving these free to all iphone4 users.

In fact, I think I should be allowed to buy one of these and get the iphone4 thrown in free :)

But I also thank the OP for highlighting this "deal" to the masses.

After I heard about this problem I went and bought a htc desire instead

iPhone 4 is not fit for it's purpose

2n2 together for what those bumper strips are really for

Apple should be recalling this faulty product and rectifying the fault foc.
They should not be allowed just to issue free pieces of rubber, they should
be made to provide a full refund and also compensate people for pushing
out a product that is not fit for purpose.

I am sure the iphone 5 next year will look really nice, but perhaps only work
reliably as a phone occasionally. shameful.
#38
I want an iPhone 4 but won't buy one until this is sorted. I don't want a bulky crappy looking 'case' over it.
#39
Just spoke to apple this is not true cold for me
#40
People are asking why this 'deal' is being voted cold. Perhaps its because it isn't a deal. You aren't getting a free bumper at all. Apple are merely saying 'oh **** we forgot to give you the complete phone when you gave use your hundreds of pounds so YOU can now make the effort to contact us to be given the rest of your phone.

These bumpers aren't something extra, they aren't a free gift, they're an essential part of the iphone that are needed to make the phone operate. You've already paid hundreds of pounds for your phone so why are we pretending that the aerial (Which is essentially what the bumper is) is a free gift? It isn't, it's the main part of the phone.

It's like McDonalds selling a burger and when you get it home there's no meat inside so you complain and they say 'oh sorry, why don't you pop back in for a free gift of a piece of meat to shove inside your bread'

Cold from me as this is certainly no deal, no free gift, just a product recall to have an essential device fitted to the faulty phone without them having the ******** to call it that
