Last.fm iPhone App iTunes

Just came across this cool music App on iTunes... basically you choose an artist, let's say The Killers, a song will start playing from that chosen group, then it will play random tracks from similar Artists eg Kaiser Chief's - Franz Ferdinand, Takes a little getting used to but once figured out its excellent... See what you think.

It's a different thing to Spotify (and not dissimilar to Spotify's radio mode).

Last.fm, as the name suggests, is more like a radio station, playing similar music to your tastes. The more you 'scrobble' (the act of telling last.fm what you're listening to), the better Last.fm gets overall. Scrobbling can be done from most media playing apps on the PC, Mac etc (the iTunes one will record what you've played on your iPod and send it to Last.fm as well). You can them go to the last.fm site, the various apps and so on to play last.fm 'stations'.

You can't just pick a particular song you like (as on Spotify). Rather you pick an artist or genre, and you say whether you like the songs it suggests or not. It's much better for finding new music than it is for playing your top songs ever.

Might be nice to point out the Xbox version is not free, as it requires an Xbox Live Gold account (Silver accounts get to use it free for couple of hours). Makes the Xbox a brilliant radio that I can leave running in the background, mind.

I use both of them, Last.fm for finding new songs and Spotify for adding to playlists.

Just because you know this doesnt mean everyone else does.

And its still a frickin' deal aint it? Free things people are unaware of.

If this gets deleted its pathetic.

How about we all post all the apps you can get for free? The Android market is full of them. A few: Abduction, Astrid, i music, Barcode Scanner, Bebbled, Cherry Rplayer, ConnectBot, Frozen Bubble, Facebook, Jewels, Listen, Meridian, Metal Detector, Seesmic, Robot Guitarist, Twidroid.

And the best: beebPlayer. iPlayer on your Android mobile via Wifi or 3G. Yes, that's right. iPlayer over 3G. For free. On any network. Including live TV and radio.

Shall I post a deal? Or a freebie? Or shall I let you go onto the Market, sort by Popularity, and install the third one down?

Last.fm is, I'm afraid, not a deal.

It's free, and it's useful, that's the only criteria some of you people should be worried about, not whether it fits into your vision of an HUKD deal.

It's not a bad app, had it installed for ages but I must say I don't use it that often. Initially the idea of kind of making your own radio station sounds great, but after a while (in these days of Spotify, Sky Songs etc.) you just get a bit fed up of not being able to listen to what you want.

To me the whole point of on demand streaming music is that you can listen to what you want, when you want and not have the downsides of a radio station in that you don't really control the output. The only plus side I can see to Last FM is that folk will say it may introduce you to stuff that you wouldn't normally listen to. With the likes of say Spotify you can try loads of new stuff whenever you want anyway and the only difference is that you directly control what you listen to.

I wouldn't really say that it's a deal as such because it's always been free. It's kind of like posting a thread about a free newspaper or a free bank account. On the other hand it's good if it brings it to the attention of folk who haven't seen it, but then how they have missed it I wouldn't know. I guess that some folk just never browse the App Store.

Not exactly true, a couple of networks (T-Mobile and MVNOs like Virgin that use their network) block BeebPlayer over 3G.

No, well done there, it's a freebie. Subtle difference.

Someone recommended this App to me, I tried it and thought it was interesting, so I decided to post it, if you've seen it before and have nothing constructive to say, then just scroll on by ....

and yes your right, this is not a deal... Its FREE:)

Got this for my 5800 as mobbler, this is a fantastic app, who needs itunes this is free.

I I used to use it regularly but I'd much rather download the music than stream tunes. I would get the spotify app though, but being a cheapskate I'm not a subscriber! As from what I have seen Spotify is a mch better app. Again just a shame there is no free version of that. But for those who want to find some new music then Last.fm is great value for nothing!

shall give it a try
