It isn't free until Autumn though is it? This is a beta for the free to play game (which will be the same but with a 'store' where you can buy items and other stuff instead of paying a subscription fee), and you're not guaranteed to get into it as they only choose specific beta applicants. I applied on the day it was announced the game was going free to play and haven't heard anything.

Also, this is the american version of the game, not sure whether the european version is being made free but I hope it is, you can still play the american version cos I played the original american beta before the game was released.

From what i understood is that, they are planning on making a free to play option in Autumn
"Today is an important day for LOTRO: we’ve announced that this fall, LOTRO will begin offering a Free-to-Play option! Players will be able to download the game and adventure in Middle-earth for free. With Free-to-Play comes the addition of the LOTRO Store, where players will have immediate in-game access to a wide variety of special items, account services, and convenience items."

and the Beta is a chance to test out the the new model (client) in the near future
"Yes! The Beta will start in the very near future. We’ll begin accepting signups immediately at http://www.lotro.com/betasignup!"
"Is this the same model you used with DDO?

It’s very similar in a large number of ways. The basic structure is the same with some changes made to support LOTRO’s different game world and wide-open environment. Customer levels, the LOTRO Store, and other aspects of LOTRO Free-to-Play are all very similar to those of Dungeons and Dragons Online®: Eberron Unlimited™."

however i could be wrong

I took out a lifetime subscription for £100+. Was that a bad deal now it's free?

i just looked on the site and found this, hope it helps:

"I have a lifetime subscription to LOTRO. What will Free-to-Play mean for me?

As a lifetime subscriber to LOTRO, you will keep all of your membership privileges and are automatically upgraded to VIP status. You will receive 500 Free Turbine Points every month like the other VIPs, but you do not have to pay a monthly fee since you are a lifetime member. All you have to do is keep playing the game and visit the LOTRO Store to spend your free Turbine Points. Lifetime members may also qualify for a special one-time Loyalty Reward of 1,000 Turbine Points. See the Loyalty Reward Special Offer Terms & Conditions for full details."

A bad move or an excellent one I really don't know. With the same payment type and amount It was competing with WoW but now it gives the appearance of failing. I REALLY hope it doesn't it's a beautiful and story-driven game.

From looking at the differences between free and paid players it's still worth paying but with lots of people able to try more of it that they couldn't in a 14 day trial.

I've also got a lifetime subscription so at least that makes me a VIP and get 500 free points a month to buy the crap in the item shop.

Edit: the news is also listed on the European site.
