Microsoft Flight Free to Play

Microsoft has just announced that their new Flight Simulator, which is due for release in Spring 2012, will be free to play.

There will be chargeable add-ons but the core game is free.

Please note this is a PC only game.

"Microsoft Flight will be available as a free download this spring, giving players the freedom to fly the skies over the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii, complete a variety of exciting missions, test their skills in flying challenges, or find hidden aerocaches on the island.

In Microsoft Flight, players view the world from above in a visually stunning and realistic representation of the earth, complete with region-specific weather patterns, foliage, terrain and landmarks. Players can choose to take the helm using highly rendered, accurate cockpits and authentic piloting procedures, or simply use their mouse and keyboard to control the plane in an exterior view. More experienced players can tailor the flight controls to match their skill level, making Microsoft Flight easy for beginners while still challenging for the most accomplished PC pilots."

It'll be free to an extent but have a lot of additional stuff as DLC like Age of Empires.

Ok yes free but one aircraft and one map/area means more like a demo in the old fashoned FPS sense? Still voted HOT as i would love this to be more than i can imagine it will be at the moment.

All that means is that the game will be addictive. Standard business lingo.

Although i think this will be a good freebie, since when did HUKD become a place to post about something that'll be free in a few months? Surely this is irrelevant until the time that it's actually free.

I agree, not to mention how horrific freebies would become if we all posted the free demos on 360/ps3 ;)

I can see both of your points of view and these thoughts did occur to me before I posted.

First I browsed through the 'Freebie' section and found a few posts deals that were pre-emptive so I assumed that this was standard HDUK practice.

I also appreciate that there are lots of shareware and free app's etc on lots of different platforms but I think that the Microsoft Flight series has a bit of a pedigree because it's been around for 27 years now and has sold millions of copies so I decided that a free version is relatively notable.

A lot of games are becoming free-to-play these days following the success of Team Fortress 2 on Steam. The developers are making money through items bought in-game and from paid DLCs. Microsoft Flight is no exception.

How is this a deal?

There will be chargeable add-ons...

Like having to buy the wings and landing gear first.

What?

Its gonna be run off paid dlc, thats why its free, not because they've deemed it too "crap" to pay for

Will have to have a look when it is released. Never played Flight Simulator X, but the videos of people working as Air Traffic control and Pilots across the world looked amazing. I wonder if you could do that on this?
