Microsoft have re-branded their SkyDrive Cloud storage to OneDrive, and to coincide with the name change they are offering up to 8GB of bonus space - 3GB if you enable Camera Upload from a smartphone app, and 5GB in referrals (500MB increments).

New sign ups get 7GB as standard, so this can max out at 15GB of free storage. If you have a "grandfather" account, you will have 25GB to begin with, so this can be expanded to 33GB - for free.

I have two Microsoft accounts and to test I signed into Account 2 using a referral link from Account 1 - this was enough activate the bonus 500MB for each account!

Yes, you can get more free storage from providers like Box and Mega, but OneDrive comes baked into Windows 8.1, Xbox One and Windows Phone - so the more free space available, the better. Dropbox offer a similar referral scheme but the process requires the other party to install the app on a new machine - here, you get the bonus when the second person signs in to their accounts

Just tried the referral myself with my partners account and it didn't work.
It said "You can't get the new customer referral bonus because you already have a OneDrive account."

I guess you have to have never used SkyDrive before to get this referral bonus.

I'm already on 50GB thanks to using my old (very old) hotmail account initially then changing the email address on the account to my gmail.

Strange, I used SkyDrive with both :-s although I recently emptied Account 2 as I plan to close it and set up an Alias to account 1 instead. Must have been a fluke whilst the system updated - I've noticed a few little changes throughout the day.

this offer is stupid... here is the warning

if you get the 100gb, you go ahead and load into your account a lot of files (say 70gb)
after one year most of them will be deleted and your account will revert back to having only 7gb.
from the 70gb you uploaded, 63gb will be gone.

this is 100gb for one year. not for life. the marketing trick is to give users free space in the hope they use a lot of it
and in the hope that after the one year they pay the subscription fee to keep that space

correct me if i am wrong

They emailed me today to offer me an additional 20GB for a year as I had asked to receive notifications regarding the SkyDrive renaming.

If you have a Windows Phone SkyDrive/OneDrive integrates really well with it

Hence why I didn't create a deal about the 100GB - this deal is for the free 8GB on offer for life. The 100GB is a bonus but you are right, not worth it in the long term

Referral Trick:

1. Sign into your OneDrive and press Get More Storage (Bottom Left)
2. Press Get Free Storage next to Referral Bonus
3. Copy your invitation link and sign out of your Microsoft account
4. Paste the link into your browser and select Sign Up Now
5. Enter the required details - make them up if necessary, and choose a .Mailinator.com email address. Press Create Account
6. Go to Mailinator.com and check the mailbox of the email you just entered - it should contain a verification email from Microsoft. Press the link to verify account (if you can not press the link here, forward this email to your personal email address)
7. Log in to One drive with this dummy account and you will receive your 500MB bonus
8. Repeat 10 times for 5GB free :)

100GB BONUS NOW LIVE!

Got my 100GB limit now. It only lasts 1 year from what I can tell (says expires 19/02/2015 on my account). At the moment 100GB storage is £32 for a year so if you don't renew in 1 year would you lose files?

If this is the same as the Windows Phone promo they did, then this may be the case:

While we’re at it, this may be a good time for an explanation of what happens after that year of extra storage is up. The way it works is this: once your year (or whatever period) is up, all your stuff remains safe, and you can keep it on SkyDrive as a sort of archival storage. You can download, view, or delete files from SkyDrive. However, and this is somewhat important: until you get back to under your previous free limit, or pay for more storage, you will not be able to edit your SkyDrive files. At all. Useful if you’re storing music or files you’re not going to touch again, but do be careful of locking yourself out of the ability to edit your SkyDrive files. You obviously can’t upload files, either (even if you delete some number of GB that’s still puts you above your free or paid limit).

you should name your source. I seen this on Engadget yesterday. I thought it was common knowledge...

apologies i didn't read the whole thing lol. Good, no need for it though

Still no encryption which is why I don't use any of the 3 x 25gb accounts I have. I simply don't trust Microsoft with anything I upload to Skydrive.

Mega seems the best one out there with their encryption and the fact they have now released their sync tool so ideal for backing up any folders on your pc which is what I want online storage for, being able to use it as a secure off-site backup solution.

Damn, missed out on the 100gb. Well at least I have a "grandfather" account anyway.

I'm never interested in free for a year storage/services, it's a hook I'd rather not be dangled on :)

What's a grandfather account?

Enabled the camera upload but no sign of the 3GB :(

I referred 4 non-hotmail addresses today, and they all signed up for Microsoft/onedrive accounts, and all verified their email addresses. Only one of the new accounts got the extra 500mb referral bonus, and my account only got one 500 mb referral bonus. What recourse do we have?
#26
I'm pretty sure they don't delete anything after the year, with Google Drive they just don't let you upload anything else.

Yes, see my comment earlier in the thread and reference to an article from a similar promotion. I chatted online to their support yesterday too, and although a little hard to understand they confirmed this. It's great if you registered additional accounts and have a lot you want to archive off. The only aspect I'm slightly unclear from is if you can still download from the account in a year's time, or if you'd have to pay to allow that too.

If you are planning to upload to the cloud for purely backup purposes you can not ignore that Amazon Glacier is far cheaper if you have more data to protect than the free dropbox / onedrive etc Use the free program FastGlacier to upload. I have been using Glacier for some time now my monthly bill to protect 150GB of data is $1 inital upload month as $3. If you have a Synology NAS they have an application built in to schedule the backups of data.

Amazon's designed Glacier to be optimized for data you don't access often—think long-term storage of photos and videos, archived project files, etc. You're not supposed to use it to regularly retrieve files or constantly delete them off the servers, and if you do it'll cost you.

Also noticing that although I'm setting auto upload on all my devices, I still haven't got the 3GB...

It does seem a little hit and miss then, cause although I couldn't get the referral bonus to work I have got the extra 3Gb from having auto upload already set up on my phone.

Anyway I'm a big fan of SkyDrive/OneDrive, the web interface is really slick for photos and the auto upload from my phone has always worked flawlessly, glad this rebranding is drawing a little bit more attention their way.

They'll soon dream up some half-baked excuse to raid Mega just like they did with it's predecessor. Then bye bye files on that too.

I've had a hotmail account since 1996, used it to sign in and only got 10gb :(
#34
I've had hotmail for yonks, regret not claiming the free 25gb back in the day, I didnt even know they offered it.

Not to fussed about having tons of cloud storage, once you upload it you don't know who going to see it or where its going to go!

You can still turn on the camera roll in the app to get an extra 3GB and refrer friends for an extra 500MB a time.
#39
I turned on camera roll on the iPad app, even synced a photo I just took and IT HASN'T ADDED THE 3GB EXTRA STORAGE! I see some others have had problems with it registering, can anything be done?
#40
How does the whole Grandfather account work? Looking online it looks like it's only available to people who already had a skydrive account rather than those who have had a hotmail account for years and want to sign up.
