I just dug out my hardly used laptop from last year, and after struggling with Windows 8.1 I was looking at getting Windows 10 for it.

It appears my free upgrade when I got it is no longer available (that offer expired in August this year apparently), and so I googled about for a decent deal on Windows 10, and luckily found a link from CNET saying you can still get it so long as you link to the link in my Get Deal.

You simply have to claim that you require 'assistance' when using your PC (ie need to magnify text, etc), and it does not check whatsoever. I am downloading mine right now, direct from Microsoft.

I don't know if this is well known, but might help others.

Valid for any PC running Windows 7 or 8.1.

gave it heat as my deal outlining the same free upgrade is now 10 weeks old

If you use assistive technologies, you can get a free upgrade to Windows 10 as Microsoft continues their efforts to improve the Windows 10 experience for people who use those technologies.

There is no restrictions on the free upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies. Anyone who uses assistive technology on Windows, are eligible for the free upgrade offer.

Microsoft activation still accepts Windows 7 and 8.x keys during clean installation of Windows 10 for automatic upgrades.
If you have an OEM machine, you find a label on the machine (sometimes under the battery), with the product key that can be used for installation.

If you've pirated Windows, Microsoft still give you an upgrade via assistive technologies.

Microsoft makes no checks for what assists you have, or do not have as part of the upgrade path.

Agree.

Not just that though, on my Surface Pro 3, switching from 8 to 10 has more or less doubled my battery life. Crazy.

I've just installed Win 10 on a laptop this weekend.
You don't have to lie, read a document by using the Magnifier, https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/11542/windows-use-magnifier, only ever use it the once, install Windows 10 with a clear conscience.
Be aware the initial upgrade is on top of your existing system and will take a while to download and install. Once that is done, you can do a clean install, which is what I do.

Cheers luv, appreciated, and I have given a little heat back.
I think there's plenty of folk like me who don't know about this, saved me a few quid (£85, is that right ?)

I tried this when I saw the CNET article and I couldn't upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1 through Chrome - I go to the web page linked on this deal but when I click "Upgrade Now", nothing happens. No page change, no message, just seemed like a dead button. Any help?

I know I didn't do it on chrome, I think I did it on internet explorer. Just clicked the button and it did its thing.

I am thinking of reporting your post for suggesting Win10 is an "Upgrade"

Saving money at the expense of the disabled? If Microsoft realise that this free upgrade is being abused then it may be withdrawn. Is using the Magnifier the same as NEEDING to use the Magnifier? This means your conscience is clear does it? Would you all use a disabled parking space if you knew no-one checked? Less than 30% of users of assistive technology are in the workforce and therefore as a population have lower incomes. A commercial screenreader can cost £1000 so Microsoft is making a difference with Windows 10, please don’t spoil it for those who really need it.

You can still easily get the Windows 10 Update for Win 7 or 8 just by downloading the full anniversary update here (when Microsoft added the anniversary update they actually removed the upgrade restriction! so it works again for all) so just download to a stick and update for free https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

Yep tried it on IE and managed to get the .exe file. Might give it a go but I'm not sure whether I'll like it.

8.1 was awful in my experience, 10 seems better to me, much better

Don't ever upgrade to Win10, I've seen it kill any PC that's been updated, performance is never the same.

As long as you have a valid Win 7 or 8.1 key you can still do a clean install of Windows 10 using that key (I replaced the failed hard drive on a Vista based laptop 3 weeks ago).
