  I believe you do need a data connection to search for an address, but if you pre-load them and save as favourites then it's not required.

  Yep! Free USA maps, you just need to download them to your sd card once the app has installed.
  I've been using this app for more than a year without fault

  Doesn't the new version of google maps (coming soon-ish) do an offline version (as well as all the 3d stuff).
