Just wanted to give heads up that Open Office 3 is out today with a bunch of new features and a much prettier interface. It still isnt as good as Microsoft Office for power users, but for 99% of people writing letters, homework, and doing your budget this is more than enough, and it's FREE.

The website is getting absolutely hammered with new downloads at the moment. If the site isn't working for you try it in a few hours.

cheers, will download when i get home from work

I have been trying to download this for a little while now. The site must be getting bombarded. I wonder if it will break Firefox's download record? Heard great things about this!

If anyone is desperate to download it now, it's just the openoffice information site that is down, all the download mirrors should still be working so it's just a case of finding a mirror.

Here is one that is hopefully working
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/openoffice.org/stable/3.0.0/

Here is another
http://openoffice.cs.utah.edu/stable/3.0.0/

You want the win32 version for windows (the 142M version)

Thanks, very handy.

Actually looking at the files available on the Utah FTP site I would go for the one above as the 128Mb as it does not come bundled with Java, as I found that quite often the OO has an out of date version in so better just get the OO 3.0 standalone and get the latest Java if required (^.7 currently so may be ok presently.)

However due to exploits using Java it is better to uninstall all old versions first and then install just the latest version.

If you just used the word processor, then AbiWord might be a better, and lighter alternative. OO is good though, I use it on my work PC where we still have Office 2000 and sometimes it doesn't open newer documents properly.

Has anyone got a link to an official Torrent to download?

Thanks, just downloaded the previous version for the 1st time a couple of days ago. Love it!

Have they done a Mac version of 3.0 as well?
Just tried to open a Word job application doc in Apple Pages (part of iWork 08) and it got it badly wrong. Had to use my old copy of Office vX (which still works under Leopard) so would be interested if this is more reliable at interpreting Word docs then I can dump vX as I have no interest in upgrading - had enough of MS bloughterware.

Yup. Version 3.0 is the first one to support Mac natively, but it uses the old framework (Carbon or Cocoa? I forget which), where as Neo Office is a fully native Mac port that uses the more up to date technolgy.

Neo office should run faster and support more of the OSX features, but their port of version 3.0 won't be out for a while so you are still stuck with 2.X

There is also a sense that you should support Neooffice because they put in years of work porting it to the Mac with no help from openoffice.

Carbon is the old API, Cocoa is the new one.

I have MS Office 2008 for Mac, and while it's pretty good and is almost completely compatible with the Windows version (bar scripting and a few other features), it's a real slug. Not sure why, but it often seems to be a lot slower than the Windows version, even on better Mac hardware. Not usually noticable on Word, but very much so on PowerPoint.

Might give NeoOffice a shot some time to see how it compares.

I'm sure this has been out for a while. I've just gone to look what my version is and it's already 3.0. Its a huge improvement over the older versions. I'm just confused how I've got it already.

Great software. Does everything that £400 piece of junk does.

Voted hot - downloading now. Interested to see what is new in V3 compared to V2.4

Open Office is great - been using it for several years.

Do remember to give a donation to help the development team (and before anyone asks - I'm not in any way connected other than being a happy home user, who is more than prepared to pay an affordable amount instead of the hundreds of pounds demanded by Microsoft.

Yeah, less than 24 hours. Are you sure you don't just have the beta test version that came out months ago?

New version 3.0 of Open Office. Great package and best of all it's free. Heat added !

This is the recently released official 3.0 version and not the beta 3.0 version which has been out for a while.

im finding iworks pretty rubbish, too used to working with microsoft office and open office where i know the essentials and can do more advance stuff.

since i dont have an xp cd key, or office cd key, i cant run xp parrallel and i cant install office, so i was going to go for open office for mac, however you're talking about this neo office thing, is it truely better than open office? i'm already familiar with open office on pc, would it be different?

It's a great product - I've got it running on a PC, a mac and Linux, and you can easily swap files around. The only problem I could see was that fonts don't always look the same, I guess depending on what you've got installed. It's got a Welsh language setting as well - great for the kids homework.
