Blyk is a new mobile operator that's launched today.

Send a text saying SHOP or FRESH to 82595 (that's 8BLYK) and you'll get added to the list to get a SIM card with 43 mins and 217 texts every month for free.

The catches?

1. You gotta be between 16 and 24.
2. You've gotta have a mobile that will do picture messaging.
3. You'll get upto 6 ads a day texted to you.

Hi does anyone have a invite code ?
#6
Why 43 mins and 217 texts? Seems to be strange numbers.

Can't see that they can afford this based on sending out 6 ads per day. Might get one just to see what it's like tho.
#7
wow thanks alot this looks like a great offer if it works lol

According to reports, they're charging companies 20p to MMS you, 10p to text you, and 2p to stick an ad on one of your outgoing texts. At these rates they'll make £4.34 from you sending texts (217 x 2p), plus between 60p and £1.20 a day on ads they send you (that's between £36 and £72 a month).

Consider that interconnect rates between operators cost about 2p an SMS, 10p a minute for calls, what they're giving you monthly costs them £8.64.

If they're making £36-72 on advertising to you, they can spend £8.64 on you, and still make between £27.36 and £63.36 a month from each user. That's more than a normal network makes on a reasonably expensive contract.

Should do. It's backed by the former CEO of Nokia.

Brand new sim. It'll have a brand new number you choose when you sign up with your invitation code.

Looks like they've got access to something like Equifax eID. They're checking names against electral roll listings and credit files.
#20
Well, i'm not 16 - 24 but I guess it's worth a go to see if they send the sim. I'm just a little concerned that they might send junk text messages to my existing sim number, and I really do not want any rubbish sending to my existing number.

The figures have apparently been worked out through years of market research into how young people use their mobiles.

that dont work either :x
#26
So they put ads on texts you send out???

Also this is only going to work as long as companies keep on signing up to send ads to you. There are only so many times they'll want you to see the same ad so this relies on new companies to keep signing up who are willing to pay 20p to show you an ad! Can't imagine many companies would be willing to pay 20p to get you to buy a mars bar for example for 30p!

If 16-17 year olds can't vote or get credit, I can't see how Equifax/electoral rolls can have their details?

This sounds like what Gizmodo planned to do. I'm sure they went bust or something similar.
Stupid idea imo.

That was it, Smart Ads. What a strange idea. On paper it seemed good, but when you look at the small print it was a right load of billox. I returned my Gizmondo Sat Nav as soon as I read it.

i only bought my gizmondo cos i liked the look off colours (which i never gota play) but it didnt work with my win98 for some reason. shame really i thought it looked nice but it just didnt work out i took mine back to get the psp

It doesnt seem as if theyre sending out invite codes yet.

There is no-one registerd on the forums on the website so i'd say it isnt active yet, possibly in the next few weeks.

Anyone get an invite code?

I tried VICE and FRESH and got the same message as everyone else.

Sounds like a good idea, i also think the adverts and such will be sent to the new sim card tehy send you, not your currnet one.

You gotta be between 16 and 24
That's ageism isn't it? Illegal I thought.

Blyk is using the Orange network. The messages you receive seem to be quite interesting, eg you will be able to reply to them for free/browse links for free using your phone. Eg: Miss Selfridge, answer the three questions and they will send you a code for 20% off

i'm still waiting for codes too. hopefully they'll start sending them out soon.
#39
yea i really cant wait for dis allways seem to run out off cred
#40
am i right in thinking that what gets given out at freshers fairs is just a bag with a tag attached saying text FRESH to 82595? not particularly exclusive in that case. did anyone actually go? i missed the freshers fair at my uni, i was interested in their stall in particular, but not so bothered if all i missed out on was a tag with info i can get on here anyway...
