Sony have released the PS3 update 3.50 which will allow you to view 3D Blu Ray Disks (As long as you have a 3DTV).
Until now the only way to watch 3D Blu Ray was with a dedicated 3D Blu Ray Player.

PS It looks like the main Playstation UK webpage is down at the time of posting. Probably due to customers checking out this major update.
Just switch on your PS3 and let it check for software updates, it will do the rest itself.

ps3 are doing an upgrade, there are lots of reports on here from all evening. It's down until 2am, but as usual Sony don't make it that public knowledge!

Oh dear, I don't understand why such an important update can receive cold votes, it's FREE. We've gone from 20 degrees to 5 in no time at all!
Long live the PS3 and it's 3D future.

No they don't. You have to go through the menu to find it unless you have automatic downloading set up with PS+.

They did say on their website a few days ago. Although ideally they've should have emailed everyone with an PS3 account.

I had no idea about it. I have Googled the subject almost daily for the past month in anticipation. I posted the news so others would know.

Yes they do. You cannot access online or PSN without updating. Its not an optional update for those with 3D TV's. Its also kicked me out of PSN and stopped me buying a genuine HUKD - PAIN for £3.29. And stopped me having an online game of Tiger Woods 2010.

is this one of those updates that stop me from playing online until I download it? Since I don't have a 3D tv, I won't make use of the update which I am required to take so I can get back online. Maybe that might explain some of the colds.

PS3 System Software Update (ver 3.50)

An update to the PS3 system software was released on 21 September 2010. If you update your PS3 system, the system software version will be 3.50 and the following features will be updated. In order to download PS3 system software version 3.50, you will need a minimum 170MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).

Main features in system software update version 3.50

* Blu-ray 3D disc playback.

The PS3 system can now play 3D content on Blu-ray 3D discs.

Note:

* A 3D compatible television that complies with the 3D standard and a high-speed HDMI cable are required to watch 3D content.
* Depending on the content, some elements may be displayed differently in 3D on the PS3 system than on other playback devices.

Other new or revised features in version 3.50

Friends

* You can now submit grief reports if you receive unwelcome or harassing messages.

Other

* You can now access public information on Facebook from Facebook-supported games.

People are probably voting cold as this update will stop you being able to use the jailbreak 'facility' which can currently only be used on version 3.41 ...well, that and not many have a 3D TV!

Lets face it thats the main reason its been done, that was the sole purpose of 3.42

I`m sticking with 3.41 ;)

yes it is i tried to access psn store yesterday it told me i had to download the update

I think this update will allow you to play 3D BluRays but only at 720p due to the fact that the PS3 has HDMI v1.3. Not a serious problem but for purists who are after 1080p you will still need a dedicated 3D BluRay player with HDMI v1.4

edit: Love my PS3, not knocking it at all.

Apart from one firmware update quite a while back all the rest have been compulsory to allow signing in to the PSN...

The only reason I put this on here (And have never posted any other updates) was to give 'The Comminity' a heads up of a milestone update.
I personaly have a 3DTV as do I am sure quite a lot of HUKD members. I don't play the Playstation daily as some of you clearly do and I have been waiting for what seemed like an age for the 3D Blu Ray update.
It was pure fluke yesterday checking on line for the update, I have been really close on a few occassions to buying a dedicated player (As I am sure some of the early technology adopters on here also have).
I just tried to help others whom I would have thought in a similar position to myself, bearing in mind the size of the HUKD forum I though it a good place to post. If it helps one person, is it not worth while? Vote how you like.
Thank you for your input, we are all entitled to an opinion.

You missed the point. I argued the point about it not being found out when they turn the ps3 on and that point is right as you only find out when you try to go online. You can still play offline.

#23
when I turned my ps3 on a message came up straight away telling me there was an update to install. I guess mine is set up diffferently

Perhaps you have set your local user account to sign-in to PlayStation Network automatically.

Whereas others have not set this feature so they can opt to remain offline or connect manually.
