Prey helps you locate your missing laptop by sending timed reports with a bunch of information of its whereabouts. This includes the general status of the computer, a list of running programs and active connections, fully-detailed network and wifi information, a screenshot of the running desktop and in case your laptop has an integrated webcam a picture of the thief.

I signed up for this yesterday and tested it out, it's amazing and I feel much safer taking my laptop out now.

I'm not sure why people are voting this cold, lots of places charge for a service like this one, I am looking to sign up to this myself now.

Nice find heat added.

so there’s actually a chance you can catch the guy (and there’s even some successful cases!).

Cheers,

I actually tested it out reporting it missing and testing the features, it's a genuinely good service and works very well.

The best part about it is that it's compatible with most operating systems so no matter what computer you have, it should work.

Thanks Heat and rep added

To me these things are usually a false sense of security, though if it's free, it's worth it on the off chance the thief isn't too clever.

What if they reinstall windows or never go online with your stolen PC ?

The more likely probaility is that they sell it on fairly quickly and the person who received the stolen goods goes online as they aren't as worried and didn't want to look a gift horse.... form the man in the pub!

Still worth having for free as IF you can find it you have more chance of getting it back.

Lets hope this free software only sends the info mentioned, and not a list of the web pages you visit and the passwords you enter.

It only does that when you change the status of the device to missing.

Only then does it start recording data and not only that, but you can change what happens when it goes missing such as setting the webcam on and off and recording certain file changes.

If you can prove that the item was stolen from you then legally it still belongs to you. the poor sap who bought it for £20 in the pub has no legal claim to it, and must claim back any loss that he has made from the person that 'sold' it to him (if he can find him).

exactly but i have no sympathy for the poor sap unless they paid market or near market rate for a half decent laptop......if someone paid £20 for a laptop, they should be charged too as they MUST know that £20 for a laptop is cheap and must have been stolen
as for burglars they are just pure lowlife scum....i hope out of all the stuff they stole from me they snort it up their nose and suffer a slow and painful death...lucky for them i wasnt in

Looks useful.
Thanks!

The ironic thing is by you guys publcising this - you've just totally reduced its chances of being useful.

Scum yes, but at least they gain from the burglary. What I really can't stand are mindless vandals who cause misery and destruction and do not even financially profit themselves.

Why would a thief come on hotukdeals when they never buy anything, just steal?
#15
An example of it's (mis)use: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8523807.stm

Not sure if this is the software or not - but the idea is the same
#16
all though there is a small chance of abuse this is extremelly unlikely as the software is open source so if someone wanted to abuse the software someone would have to approve the updates to the software coding that would enable abuse. i think the chance of getting your hardware back outweigh the software being abused:

See http://www.geek.com/articles/apple/thieves-caught-on-stolen-macbook-webcam-20080513/

The software in the bcc article is different to the prey software as one is controlled by an admin and the other is controlled by the user so that kind of abuse would be impossible unless as stated it is written into teh coding - which i think would never happen
